Pam Henderson Smith, Seeds & Production Editor
11/22/2005
Pam Henderson Smith was reared on a diversified grain and livestock farm in west-central Illinois where five generations of family still till and toil. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois and currently is a seed technology and production editor for Farm Journal.
The American Agricultural Editors’ Association (AAEA) named her Writer of the Year in 1990 for a series of stories detailing the complexities that farmers face working together in a family business. In 2005, her coverage of Asian soybean rust was selected as story of the year by AAEA, and her portfolio of work earned writer of the year honors. The Asian soybean rust series was further recognized in 2006 as the best series in the Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award. “Asian Soybean Rust Takes Root in the U.S.” went on to win the coveted Grand Neal from a pool of more than 1,200 entries. It is the first time an agricultural publication has won the Grand Neal, which is generally considered the Pulitzer of business journalism.
Pam lives in Decatur, Ill.
