Mistakes When Working with a Marketing Adviser – Part 4

11/25/2009

Sara Schafer, Farm Journal Media Business & Crops Online Editor

The first-ever Marketing Rally is less than a month away. Held at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago, the world’s center for grain, this historic gathering provides producers unprecedented access to the best marketing minds in agriculture – all under one roof.

During the event, these 16 market experts will provide extremely valuable and elite marketing information to participants.

To spur some Marketing Rally thinking, we’ve asked all of the experts the following question:

What’s the No. 1 mistake farmers make in working with a marketing adviser?

Here are answers from four of the market experts:

Bill Biederman, Allendale
Farmers don’t create a plan and stick to it. Do not let the emotions of the market, the excuses of why it is moving or the projections of where it is going to get in your way. If your plan was set up at profitable levels, then execute and implement.
Kevin McNew, Cash Grain Bids
You can’t be asleep at the wheel in your cash market. Even if your market advisor helps with your futures/options trading, chances are he doesn’t have a read on the pulse of your local cash market. The farmer needs to take control of his cash market decisions, and find those opportunities to make 10 to 20 cents more from trucking and storage opportunities that arise.

Bob Utterback, Utterback Marketing
I see producers coming to advisors to help improve their marketing performance. In the volatile markets we are experiencing there are big opportunities developing for the producer, but the ability to focus on the end result is getting more difficult. I see producers starting off as a hedger where they are focus on locking up a profit margin like we are currently seeing for 2010 corn where over a $150/acre profit exists if all inputs are locked up. The problem is, with the current aggressive and fast price swings, producers sometimes try to outguess the market actions.
