For some, the only firsthand account they’ve had of farming and living off the land is Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House on the Prairie” books. At her home site in Mansfield, Mo., also known as the land of the big red apple, Laura’s history and writing of farm and prairie life from the late 1800s is well documented and educational for its many visitors.

“I’m amazed at what this field is yielding, considering what the crop has been through,” says J.D. Kuhns of Arthur, Ill. The field was averaging 175 bu. per acre, although it had received only 0.4” of rain since June 23 and had endured many nights when temperatures refused to fall below 80° F. Kuhns combined a small amount last week and began harvesting seriously on Labor Day. “If all our fields yield this well, I’ll be elated,” he says.

In the heart of Montana, Pasta Montana manufactures a line of more than 50 dry pastas ranging from petite shells and orzo to fettuccine. Everything from the plant's extrusion and packaging machinery to the 30,000 sq. ft. storage warehouse is state-of-the-art. The fully automated 62,500 sq. ft. plant has an annual capacity of 70 million pounds. Montana is a great place to make pasta because of its large supply of high-protein, high-gluten durum wheat that is grown in the area. Pasta Montana is located in the heart of the Golden Triangle, a highly fertile area that extends from Great Falls to well into North Dakota. Montana durum wheat has a pure yellow color, high protein, high gluten and delicate nutty wheat flavor. The total amount of dry pasta consumed in the U.S. in 2009 was 1.4 billion pounds.

Here I am with "Lucky Stars". She was born last year in January here in Southern Illinois. Usually we have no problems calving during this time of year. Yes it is cold but when you live at the southern end of the state we have to calf when there is the less amount of mud. Mud is a dirty word here. Anyway, Lucky Stars mommy decided she didn't want to play the motherhood game and abandoned her. Into my backseat of my pickup truck she goes to get warm and dry and nourishment. At my home which is 14 miles away from the pasture, I have a wonderful entry-way into my barn office. Here I have an electric heating pad (xlarge), several wool blankets and a great propane heater that will get the room to 80 degrees in no time. This is where I can house my little ones and get them on their feet. With plenty of rubbing, bottles of warm water placed on her belly and a full belly of fresh colstrum she is on the uphill swing. Lucky for her and lucky for us, a tragedy happened.

The drought in the Southern Plains has forced thousands of cattle off parched pastures, many to packers in what promises to be one of the most drastic herd reductions in history. The luckier ones, however, have found new homes. Among them is this happy Charolais bull, lazing around a feed pen at Frontera Feedyard at Muleshoe in the Texas Panhandle. Frontera Managing Partner Paul Colman says ranchers from Texas and New Mexico have sent his yard hundreds of cows--some still calving--for "warehousing" while they hope for rain next spring.

My husband and I own Sawyer Land & Cattle. For the past 10 days, we have been bringing cattle back home after a summer of grazing on pasture grass. Today, my husband, Derek Sawyer, left, and one of our employees, Austin Huber, right, prepared the calves for the winter. That process included an ear tag so we can properly identify the cattle, fly repellant and an immunization that would be same as a flu shot for humans. The picture shows the chute we use to hold the calves while we put in the ear tags and administer the shot. My husband and his staff worked more than 100 calves today.
