IMMIGRATION:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. AFTER LAST WEEK'S EVENTS-- PROPOSED IMMIGRATION LEGISLATION IS FACING MORE SPIRITED DEBATE AS IT MOVES THROUGH THE SENATE. ONE OF THE BIGGEST BENEFACTORS OF THE SENATE VERSION OF THE IMMIGRATION REFORM PACKAGE COULD BE DAIRY FARMERS. OF THE HALF MILLION UN-DOCUMENTED FARM WORKERS IN THIS COUNTRY, AT ESTIMATED TEN-PERCENT OR ABOUT 50-THOUSAND PEOPLE, WORK IN COMMERCIAL SIZED U-S DAIRY FARMS. THIS LEGISLATION GIVES THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS A CHANCE TO STAY IN THE U-S AND WORK TOWARDS CITIZENSHIP.

FARM BILL:

HERE WE GO AGAIN, THE HOUSE AG COMMITTEE SAYS IT READY TO START MARK UP ON A NEW FARM BILL. COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN FRANK LUCAS SAYS HE PLANS TO GET STARTED MAY 15TH. THE SENATE HAD HOPED TO GET STARTED IN APRIL BUT TIME IS QUICKLY RUNNING OUT. THE CURRENT ONE YEAR EXTENSION EXPIRES ON SEPTMEBER 30TH.

DROUGHT RELIEF BILL:

ALSO IN WASHINGTON, SOUTH DAKOTA REPRESENTATIVE KRISTI NOEM HAS INTRODUCED LEGISLATION TO HELP PROVIDE LIVESTOCK OWNERS WITH A SAFETY NET. THE BILL WOULD EXTEND LIVESTOCK AID PROGRAMS THAT EXPIRED UNDER THE PREVIOUS FARM BILL. THE FIVE YEAR BILL WOULD ALSO APPLY RETROACTIVELY TO COVER LOSSES FROM 2012 AND 2013.
