HungerU Tour engages college students on campuses

One fifth wheel trailer rolls into town and, before long, parks on a college campus. Soon after, the HungerU Tour’s trailer transforms into a 3,000' display, complete with adult-size pedal tractors. While the tractors are fun—and a magnet for students—the mission of the Tour is serious. It’s  charge: to educate college students, academia and all those who eat about the critical role high-tech agriculture plays in addressing the world’s food crisis.

"Many social and political views are shaped in college," says Brian Hogue, director of operations for the Farm Journal Foundation. "With food and farming practices largely misunderstood by consumers of all ages, and a hungry world population creeping up to 9 billion by 2050, it was time to hit the road for food-scarcity education. Advanced agriculture is not just the best solution to diminish hunger, it is the only solution."

The Tour, a special project of the Foundation’s Farmers Feeding the World effort, is made possible by support from DuPont. Many of the Tour stops include evening Food Forums with area thought leaders, who have varying viewpoints.

"It has been great to see how engaged the students have been—and to see the lightbulb of understanding come on," Hogue says.

The educational event kicked off at Michigan State University in early October and has stopped at Kansas State University, University of Illinois, Purdue University, The Ohio State University and the National FFA Convention. On deck are the University of Missouri on Oct. 29 and 30 and Iowa
State University on Nov. 1 and 2.
