Too Big, You Can Fail
With all due respect, I have had enough reading about Big-Time Operators. Bigger is not always better. I know plenty of farmers who are very good operators and probably don’t owe anything to anybody. They support their schools, church and anything else their community needs.
Your magazine should do more investigating before publishing articles that make you look bad. I lived through the 1980s and saw what happened to many farm families and businesses. It seems we are glorifying the same things that happened then. History will repeat itself, I’m afraid.
Support for Renewable Fuels
Renewable fuels need to be a top priority, but a feedstock other than corn must be developed to make ethanol. In Iowa, farmers are growing a 3' tall grass that is used to make ethanol. Another plant, such as sorghum, also needs development as butanol.
America is wasting billions of tax dollars keeping troops in the Middle East to protect our access to oil. Compressed natural gas is being used in trucks and buses and needs to be developed for farm equipment. The cost to use enewable fuels is less than petroleum oils and less polluting to the environment, which needs to be seriously considered.
Who Is FamilyFarms Group?
I’ve been reading Top Producer and the article put in there by Howard Buffett. Just who is this FamilyFarms Group? If what I read is what I think it is, it’s probably one of the most dangerous things we’ve got in agriculture today. They are talking about how they can farm a whole county in Iowa all by themselves.
