The following photos and captions were submitted by Mark Kistenmacher, General Manager at Mid-Iowa Cooperative. Mid-Iowa Cooperative sustained severe wind damage to three of its seven locations after derecho (Spanish for "straight ahead"), straight-lined winds in excess of 100 miles per hour tore through east-central Iowa on July 11, 2011.
But perhaps more impressive was the co-op's ability to handle the disaster and bounce back from the event in an impressively small amount of time.
Garwin
In Garwin, 13 bins were destroyed or damaged, which amounted to 1.4 million bu. in lost bin space along with four receiving legs. Garwin handled the 2011 harvest by dumping and transferring the 2011 harvest receipts to other company locations. Currently, this location is being decommissioned and rebuilt as a new, state-of-the art facility "Midway," with a scheduled completion date of Sept. 1, 2012.
Green Mountain
Green Mountain saw 14 bins destroyed or damaged — equivalent to 1.7 million bu. in lost bin space as well as five receiving legs. This location's grain bins were emptied and rebuilt by Oct. 15, 2011 to accommodate the 2011 harvest receipts
