Syngenta Puts the E-Z in Refuge

Jan 11, 2013

Planting corn hybrids containing Bt traits is a popular grower solution to control pests, improve quality of corn and decrease use of pesticides. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires all fields with Bt crops to have refuge areas to help prevent the development of insect resistance. A refuge area includes non-Bt corn seed in addition to the Bt seed.

The industry trend is toward making traits available as "integrated refuge" solutions. "Single bag, integrated refuge delivers the utmost convenience for farmers, allowing them to more easily comply with refuge requirements while helping manage against the development of resistant insects due to the use of multiple modes of action," said Jill Wenzel, Syngenta product lead for commercial traits.

Syngenta has two traits stacks available as single bag, integrated refuge. Each package contains five percent seed of a hybrid without Bt traits and 95 percent seed of a corn hybrid with insect control technology. Both seed hybrids in the bag feature tolerance to glyphosate herbicides.

Agrisure Viptera™ 3220 E-Z Refuge™ trait stack is a targeted solution for corn growers in regions where corn rootworm management is not a primary concern. It offers dual modes of action for control of multiple above-ground lepidopteran pests and corn borer and features the breakthrough Agrisure Viptera trait for best-in-class control of the multi pest complex.

Agrisure® 3122 E-Z Refuge trait stack is intended for use in areas where both corn rootworm and lepidopteran pest management are primary concerns, including corn-on-corn acres. Packages contain dual modes of action against both corn borer and corn rootworm.

Agrisure Viptera 3220 E-Z Refuge and Agrisure 3122 E-Z Refuge trait stacks are available for the 2013 planting season from Syngenta seed brands Garst®, Golden Harvest® and NK®.
