International 4300

Sep 11, 2012

This tractor is featured for the month of March in the officially licensed 2013 Farmall calendar.

In the mid-1960s, the horsepower race was raging. John Deere bought out the massive four-wheel-drive 8010, and IHC turned to Frank C Hough Company, an IHC subsidiary that built construction equipment for a quick response. The result was the 4300, which was advertised as the “World’s Most Powerful Four-Wheel-Drive High-Speed Agricultural Tractor.”

The 4300 featured a six-cylinder 817-cubic inch turbocharged engine, four-wheel steering, and air brakes. The machine was too big for most farms, and only a few implements worked with the machine. A handful of early experimental machines were tested on farms. Only 44 International 4300s were produced, and most of those worked on construction sites rather than farms. This 1960 4300 is serial number 1006—which is most probably the sixth model built and quite possibly one of the experimentals. Only a half-dozen or so of the 40,000 lb. 4300s are known to have survived. This one is in residence at the Farmall-Land Museum in Avoca, Iowa.
