2014 DFA Cares Foundation Scholarships

Dairy Farmers of America recognizes the importance of developing future leaders in the dairy industry, and is committed to investing in their education. Since its inception seven years ago, the DFA Cares Foundation Scholarship has grown to honor an increasing number of outstanding students who are pursuing careers in the dairy industry.

Selection criteria include a commitment and passion for a career in the dairy industry; extracurricular activities, awards and work experience; and academic achievement. This year, DFA’s scholarship committee identified a record 36 recipients who will receive a combined total of $42,500.

The 2014 honorees include:

Pre-College Students

  • Lora Berning, Sidney, Ohio, planning to attend Wright State University and major in food science
  • Ellissa Clark, Morgan, Utah, planning to attend Brigham Young University and major in communications
  • Kelly Falk, Rio, Wis., planning to attend the University of Wisconsin – Platteville and major in animal science
  • Will Jonas, Pleasant Mount, Pa., planning to attend Penn State University, Delaware Valley College or The Ohio State University and major in animal science
  • Keith Koerner, Portageville, N.Y., planning to attend Cornell University and major in animal science
  • Jacob Lay, Madisonville, Tenn., planning to attend the University of Tennessee – Knoxville and major in dairy and beef nutrition
  • Tony Lopes, Gustine, Calif., planning to attend California Polytechnic State University and major in dairy science
  • Abigail Martin, Janesville, Wis., planning to attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison and major in dairy science
  • Casey Porter, Watertown, N.Y., planning to attend Cornell University and major in animal science
  • Anna Schmenk, Leipsic, Ohio, planning to attend The Ohio State University and major in food science and technology
  • Tracy Schmitz, Axtell, Kan., planning to attend Kansas State University and major in mechanical engineering
  • Tricia Schmitz, Axtell, Kan., planning to attend Kansas State University and major in computer science
  • Shan Sherwood, Nephi, Utah, planning to attend Utah State University and major in animal, dairy and veterinary sciences
  • Emil Walleser, De Soto, Wis., planning to attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison and major in dairy science 
  • Dakota Zapalac, La Grange, Texas, planning to attend Texas A&M University or Oklahoma State University and major in large animal veterinary medicine

Undergraduate Students

  • Amy Bunse, Cosby, Mo., attends Northwest Missouri State University, majoring in agricultural business
  • Marina Cable, Neshanic Station, N.J., attends The Ohio State University, majoring in animal science
  • Jenna Diehl, Elkland, Mo., attends the University of Arkansas, majoring in agricultural business
  • Amber Gabel, Newport, Pa., attends Pennsylvania State University, majoring in animal science
  • Gavin Gates, Burdett, N.Y., attends Cornell University, majoring in agricultural and animal sciences
  • Victoria Giebler, Neosho, Mo., attends Missouri State University, majoring in agriculture business and farm management
  • Diane Gress, Shreve, Ohio, attends The Ohio State University, majoring in agriculture communications
