Auction Action for Precision Ag Equipment

March 2, 2010
By: Sara Schafer, Farm Journal Media Business and Crops Editor

One man's upgrade is another's opportunity. In response to a growing amount of good quality used precision ag equipment available, Chris Tucker has worked since December to assemble an absolute auction dedicated to precision ag.
"I've been in the precision ag business for 10 years, and I've been working in auctions for two years. In the last few years, there's been a building market for used precision ag equipment,” Tucker says. "I've noticed a trend in farm auctions that when used precision ag equipment is included, it's one of the hottest items for sale.”
A first of its kind, Tucker's auction will take place March 18 in Effingham, Ill. He's also offering online bidding using Proxibid.
"This is a good way for people to get into some entry-level systems or expand current line of equipment,” Tucker says. "I've targeted the Midwest, but equipment is coming from more than a dozen dealers as well as farmers and sourced from Ohio to Texas to Minnesota.”
He explains most of the equipment is Trimble or Ag Leader, and products range from complete combine yield monitoring kits, individual monitors, steering systems, application control systems, and TruCount clutch kits.
"This is an evolving catalog. We'll continue to get consignments in until the week of the sale,” he says. The complete catalog is available here. (
"I'm hoping to at least have 100 to 150 bidders on site and that many online as well,” Tucker says.
After the event, Tucker says he plans to continue hosting precision ag auctions.
"I choose this first event to be an absolute auction, but I am considering hosting reserve auctions as well,” he says. "Also, we may look to do more than one of these a year–one in the spring before guys start planting and then one after harvest before the year ends.”
