Earliest Finish Ever for Corn Planting

The rainless warm days seen in early April allowed many farmers to not only get into the field, but also check corn planting off of their to-do lists. According to farmer reports to AgWeb's Crop Comments, this planting season has been just about perfect.

"This spring has been one that we dream about having, but seldom receive!” says a Greene County, Ill., farmer. "The weather is quite a contrast to what we have worked with in the past.”

Several farmers said they finished corn planting earlier this year than ever before and definitely way ahead of last year.

See when farmers finished up:

April 13
Southeast Iowa: We were fortunate to get all of our corn planted this year by April 13.  We had 4.30" of rain last weekend but the corn is all up...except for where it washed out of course.  We felt it was just way too early to put beans in after we finished corn so we shut it down and were hoping that we could go this week and hustle the beans in the ground.

April 18
St. Clair and Madison counties, southwest Illinois: We finished corn on our farm on the 18th. Not sure I ever recall finishing that early or being able to plant it all in 9 consecutive days. We had almost 6 days in the ground before getting 1.1” of rain spread out over three days.

April 19
Bond County, Ill.: Finished planting our corn on Monday, April 19th.  By far the earliest we have ever completed. Weather has been ideal. Our first 300 acres are up and out of the ground.

April 21
Poweshiek County, central Iowa: We finished planting corn on 4/21 in near perfect conditions. I'd estimate 85% to 90% of the corn planted in this area.

April 20
Olmsted County, Minn.: Finished planting corn 4/20/2010. Earliest ever. Our first planted corn has 1 ½ inch sprouts.

April 22
Northern Buchanan County, Iowa: Finished planting corn April 22 and the soil conditions were excellent. This is the earliest we have started and finished in 30 some years.

April 23
South Central Minnesota: Finished corn on 4/23, only got 2 tenths of rain on Friday night/Saturday morning.  Was hoping for more. Has been awfully dry March and April.
