Electric Drives Find New Home on Ag Machines

January 18, 2010
By: Margy Fischer, Farm Journal Machinery Editor and Test Plot Director

The demand for improved fuel efficiency, emission reductions and increased performance led AGCO to display a new concept vehicle. The ElectRoGator is a new kind of machine that displaces hydrostatic drive systems with electric drives.

This can provide increased acceleration and up to a 20% reduction in fuel use. AGCO representatives say that although the new approach to power is displayed at Ag Connect Expo is featured on a RoGator, farmers would be more likely to see the technology used on self-propelled windrowers and combines before a sprayer.

The electric drive can power: the engine fan drive, A/C compressor, air compressor, hydraulic pump, system pump and auxiliary power supply.
