June Milk Production Up 2.4%

USDA reported this afternoon that U.S. milk production climbed 2.4% in June over a year ago, though cow numbers continue to lag last year by an estimated 108,000 cows. Milk production in the top 23 dairy producing states was up 2.7%.
 
The two top dairy states, California and Wisconsin, were both up significantly. California was up 3.5% over last year, though cow numbers in the Golden State still lag last year by 53,000 head. Milk per cow in California was up 120 lb/cow for the month. In Wisconsin, production climbed 5.1%, the largest jump in the nation. Milk cows in Wisconsin are up 5,000 head compared to a year ago.
 
The other top states had more modest increases. New York was up just 0.2%, Idaho was up 3.5%, and Pennsylvania was up 1.1%.
