Farmers could gain more bushels per acre by planting twin-row corn, according to research from Agrigold, a seed corn distributor throughout most of the Corn Belt.
Mike Kavanaugh, Agrigold agronomy manager, spoke during a learning session during the Top Producer Seminar.
Agrigold tested five hybrids in 37 plots across several states.
Kavanaugh says the results showed that twin-row corn out yielded 30” row corn by 4.9 bu./acre. "Twins gave a positive yield response 69.2% of the time.”
Additionally, the twin-row corn had a thicker stalk diameter, ear height that averaged 1” higher and plant height that was 1 ½” taller.
Kavanaugh says the twin-row corn gains these advantages due to the plants having more rooting area and can better utilize nutrients and water.
