TODAY ON AGDAY

APRIL 12, 2013

BUDGET:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. IT'S A LONG BUDGET PROCESS AHEAD, BUT IT APPEARS LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS COULD ONCE AGAIN GET DISASTER ASSISTANCE.

HORSE SLAUGHTER:

ALSO TUCKED INSIDE THE PRESIDENT'S BUDGET - A LINE THAT WOULD ONCE AGAIN ELIMINATE LEGAL HORSE SLAUGHTER IN THIS COUNTRY. IN A REPORT IN THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE BUDGET DOES NOT INCLUDE FUNDING FOR USDA INSPECTORS AT HORSE SLAUGHTER FACILITIES. WITHOUT THOSE INSPECTIONS, THE HORSE MEAT COULD NOT BE EXPORTED. THAT HAPPENED IN 2007, EFFECTIVELY CLOSING THAT INDUSTRY IN THE U-S.

IMMIGRATION RALLY:

IN OTHER NEWS FROM WASHINGTON - THOUSANDS OF IMMIGRANTS AND ACTIVISTS RALLIED IN THE NATION'S CAPITOL. THEY ARE PRESSURING CONGRESS TO APPROVE IMMIGRATION REFORM. THESE PROTESTORS WANT ANY REFORM PACKAGE TO GRANT 11 MILLION ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS A PATH TOWARDS CITIZENSHIP. SENATORS WRITING A SWEEPING IMMIGRATION BILL HAVE SAID THEY HOPE TO FINISH THEIR WORK THIS WEEK. THE LEGISLATION IS OF VITAL INTEREST AGRICULTURE WHICH STRUGGLES TO FIND A LEGAL WORKFORCE TO WORK IN ORCHARDS AND DAIRIES. OF THE 11 MILLION ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN THIS COUNTRY, SOME ESTIMATES PUT THE NUMBER OF ILLEGAL FARM WORKERS AT ONE MILLION PEOPLE.

SATURDAY MAIL:

IT APPEARS SATURDAY DELIVERY OF MAIL WILL NOT BE GOING AWAY ANY TIME SOON. THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE U-S POSTAL SERVICE VOTED TO CONTINUE SATURDAY DELIVERY. BUT THAT STEP WAS MERELY ACADEMIC.
