TODAY ON AGDAY

APRIL 9, 2013

COLD SNAP PLAINS:
EASTER IS OVER AND WE'RE TWO WEEKS INTO APRIL, YET ANOTHER WINTER STORM IS SETTING ITS SIGHTS ON THE GREAT PLAINS.

CROP WATCH:

THE COLD SNAP THAT HIT AT THE END OF MARCH DIDN'T PASS QUIETLY. ITS PRESCENCE IS SHOWING UP IN OKLAHOMA'S WHEAT FIELDS. MIKE HOFFMAN HAS DETAILS IN THIS MORNING'S CROP WATCH.

CROP PROGRESS:

IT'S WEEK TWO FOR USDA'S OFFICIAL CROP PROGRESS REPORT. THERE'S A SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT IN WINTER WHEAT CONDITIONS. 36% IS GOOD TO EXCELLENT. THAT'S A TWO POINT IMPROVEMENT FROM LAST WEEK. 34% IS FAIR. BUT AGAIN WEATHER THIS WEEK COULD PUT A CRIMP ON CROP CONDITIONS. VERY FEW CROPS HAVE PLANTING UPDATES AT THIS POINT.  COTTON IS 5% PLANTED...TWO POINS BEHIND AVERAGE. RICE IS 17% PLANTED. IT'S THREE POINTS BEHIND.  THERE'S NO NATIONAL FIGURES ON CORN PLANTING YET. USDA SAYS THAT REPORT COMES OUT NEXT WEEK.

HAY PRICES:

THERE APPEARS TO BE NO IMMEDIATE LET-UP IN THE PRICE OF HAY. USDA'S AGRICULTURAL PRICES REPORT SHOWS THE ALL-HAY PRICE AVERAGED 196-DOLLARS A TON. THAT'S 13-DOLLARS A TON HIGHER THAN A YEAR AGO OF THE TOP 27 PRODUCING STATES, COLORADO HAD THE HIGHEST ALL-HAY PRICE. LOOKING AT ALFALFA - IT'S AVERAGE PRICE IS TWO-HUNDRED-19 DOLLARS A TON, 19-DOLLARS HIGHER THAN A YEAR AGO.

DAIRY MEETING:

OUR PARTNERS AT DAIRY TODAY ARE COVERING THE NATIONAL DAIRY PRODUCERS CONFERENCE WHICH IS NOW UNDERWAY IN INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA. THE EVENT IS HOSTED BY THE NATIONAL MILK PRODUCERS FEDERATION.
