TODAY ON AGDAY

DECEMBER 26, 2013

SOY TRADE AND TRANS:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. I HOPE YOU HAD A NICE CHRISTMAS. SOYBEANS HAVE BEEN THE BRIGHT SPOT OF THE U-S GRAIN MARKETS THIS MARKETING YEAR. CAN THEY SUSTAIN THAT SUCCESS IN 2014?

CATTLE ON FEED:

TOPPING OUR "BEEF TODAY" REPORT - THE NUMBER OF CATTLE AND CALVES ON FEED CAME IN AT 10 POINT 7 MILLION HEAD. THAT'S DOWN 5 PERCENT FROM LAST DECEMBER...MAKING IT THE SECOND LOWEST FOR THAT MONTH SINCE THE USDA STARTED KEEPING TRACK BACK IN 1996. MARKETINGS WERE ALSO DOWN 5 PERCENT WHILE PLACEMENTS WERE OFF THREE.

RABOBANK BEEF:

HEADING INTO THE NEW YEAR, IT APPEARS GLOBAL BEEF SUPPLIES WILL REMAIN TIGHT - AT LEAST FOR THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF 2014. AND ATTENTION FOCUSES ON CHINA. RABO-BANK ANALYSTS SAY BEEF SUPPLIES WILL BE TIGHT. INCREASING DEMAND FOR BEEF IMPORTS TO CHINA WILL BE SUPPORTIVE OF STRONG PRICES.  MEANWHILE, LOWER FEED COSTS AND INDUCED HERD BUILDING WILL RESULT IN ONLY SLIGHT INCREASES IN THE GLOBAL BEEF SUPPLY. RABOBANK IS EXPECTING CHINA'S IMPORTS OF BOTH FROZEN AND CHILLED BEEF ARE EXPECTED TO GROW FURTHER, DRIVEN BY THE SHORTAGE OF BEEF IN THE DOMESTIC MARKET.

CROP WATCH:

LET'S GET A GLIMPSE OF YOUR FARM COUNTRY WEATHER ON THIS THURSDAY MORNING. HERE'S MIKE HOFFMAN FROM THE AGDAY WEATHER-CENTER, MIKE.

ADM SETTLEMENT:

ARCHER DANIELS MIDLAND SAYS ITS HAS REACHED A SETTLEMENT WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AND THE SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION...TO THE TUNE OF 54 MILLION DOLLARS. THE CASE GOES BACK TO 2008--FOLLOWING SOME QUESTIONAL TRANSACTIONS BY ONE OF ADM'S FOREIGN SUBSIDIARIES.

OSHA LETTER:

U-S SENATOR MIKE JOHANNS IS RALLYING THE TROOPS IN AN EFFORT AGAINST OSHA.

THE FORMER SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE AND 42 OF HIS FELLOW SENATORS SENT A LETTER TO OSHA REQUESTING IT STOP REGULATIONS ON FAMILY FARMS. JOHANNS SAYS IN 2011, OSHA INCLUDED ON FARM GRAIN STORAGE AND HANDLING UNDER ITS WATCH...RATHER THAN EXEMPTING FAMILY FARMS. JOHANNS SAYS IT ESSENTIALLY EXPANDS OSHA'S OVERSITE TO NEARLY EVERY FARM IN THE COUNTRY...AND SIDE STEPS TYPICAL RULEMAKING AND CONGRESSIONAL REVIEW.

ANALYSIS:

WHO DO YOU RELY-ON TO COME-UP WITH MARKETING STRATEGIES OR ANY BUSINESS DECISION FOR THAT MATTER? A GROWING NUMBER OF FARMERS RELY ON A NETWORK OF LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE. FARM DIRECTOR AL PELL TAKES A CLOSER LOOK IN ANALYSIS.

SNOWMAN COLLECTION:

EVEN THOUGH IT'S THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS, MANY OF US WILL KEEP OUR DECORATIONS UP FOR AT LEAST THROUGH THE NEW YEARS CELEBRATION. FOR ONE CHRISTMAS "ELF" IN BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA YOU PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE TO WORK TOO HARD TO CONVINCE HER TO KEEP HER SNOWMAN COLLECTION UP YEAR-ROUND. SHE HAS FROSTY AND ALL OF HIS FRIENDS. MANY, MANY FRIENDS. OUR BUDDY CLIFF NAYLOR FROM AFFILIATE KFYR TAKES US TO THIS INDOORS WINTER WONDERLAND.

RECIPE:

IF YOU NEED A NEW COOKIE RECIPE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, YOU SHOULD ADD THIS ONE TO YOUR COLLECTION. ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIKE GIRL SCOUT COOKIES. TODAY'S RECIPE IS FOR CHOCOLATE THINNY MINT COOKIES. WE GOT IT FROM KRISTINASHOUSE.COM, WHO REGULARLY BLOGS ON AGWEB.

HERE ARE THE INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 STICKS OF UNSALTED BUTTER

1 1/2 CUPS FIRMLY PACKED BROWN SUGAR

2 TABLESPOONS WATER

12 OUNCE BAG OF SEMI-SWEET CHOCOLATE CHIPS

2 1/2 CUPS ALL PURPOSE FLOUR

1 1/4 TEASPOON BAKING SODA

1/2 TEASPOON SALT

2 EGGS

10 OUNCE BAG OF ANDEES CREME DE MENTHE BAKING CHIPS

WARM THE BUTTER, BROWN SUGAR AND WATER IN A SAUCEPAN OVER LOW HEAT, STIRRING CONSTANTLY, UNTIL BUTTER IS MELTED. AND THEN ADD THE CHOCOLATE CHIPS. STIR A WHILE LONGER UNTIL THE CHIPS ARE PARTIALLY MELTED. REMOVE FROM HEAT AND FINISH STIRRING UNTIL CHIPS ARE COMPLETELY MELTED. POUR THE MIXTURE INTO A LARGE MIXING BOWL AND LET IT START TO COOL DOWN.  MEANWHILE IN MEDIUM SIZED BOWL COMBINE THE DRY INGREDIENTS. IF IT'S BEEN TEN MINUTES, GO AHEAD AND MIX THE EGGS INTO THE WET INGREDIENTS WITH YOUR POWER MIXER ON HIGH. AFTER THAT'S DONE, REDUCE THE SPEED TO LOW AND START TO ADD-IN THE DRY INGREDIENT MIXTURE SLOWLY. NOW YOU CAN ADD IN YOUR MINT CHIPS, STIRRING GENTLY. PLACE THE COMBED MIXTURE IN THE FRIG AND LET THE BATTER CHILL FOR AN HOUR. ONCE CHILLED, PREHEAT OVEN TO 350 DEGREES.  TAKE SMALL SCOOPS AND PLACE THE BALLS ABOUT TWO INCHES ON A BAKING SHEET.  THEY'LL NEED 10-12 MINUTES BUT BE SURE NOT TO OVERBAKE. FOR MORE RECIPES, CHECK ON KRISTINA'S BLOG ON AGWEB. IT'S CALLED "FOUR SEASONS OF FUN".
