FEBRUARY 13, 2013

STATE OF THE UNION:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. THE COUNTRY TUNED IN LAST NIGHT HEAR THE PRESIDENT'S PLAN FOR MOVING THE COUNTRY FORWARD. AND IT'S JUST THE BEGINNING OF ANOTHER YEAR OF FURIOUS DEBATES IN WASHINGTON.

IMMIGRATION:

THE PRESIDENT AND MEMBERS OF BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE ARE WORKING TO PASS COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM THIS YEAR. IT'S AN ISSUE THE NATIONAL CATTLEMEN'S ASSOCIATION IS PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO. THEY SAY IT NEEDS TO BE A TWO PRONGED APPROACH...POLICY REFORM AND BORDER SECURITY. ON THE POLICY SIDE, NCBA SAYS CATTLE INDUSTRY WORKERS DIFFER FROM OTHERS IN THE INDUSTRY. WOODALL SAYS SOME PROPOSALS INCLUDE MAKING USDA RESPONSIBLE FOR AGRICULTURAL WORKER PROGRAMS. HE SAYS ON ONE HAND, AT LEAST USDA UNDERSTAND THE INDUSTRY'S NEEDS, BUT ON THE OTHER, IT WOULD REQUIRE MANY MORE RESOURCES TO MANAGE A NATIONAL SYSTEM.

MEAT INSPECTORS:

THE USDA SECRETARY'S COMMENTS ON FURLOUGHING MEAT INSPECTORS IS DRAWING CRITICISM FROM THE MEAT INDUSTRY.

FARM INCOME FORECAST:

YESTERDAY WE REPORTED SEVERAL OF USDA'S LONG RANGE FORECASTS FOR AGRICULTURE. INCLUDED IN THE LIST, WAS U.S. FARM INCOME. THE REPORTS SAYS FARM INCOME IS EXPECTED TO HIT ITS HIGHEST LEVEL IN 40 YEARS, TOPPING 128 BILLION DOLLARS. THAT WOULD MAKE IT THE HIGHEST SINCE 1973. USDA'S PREDICTION ASSUMES A REBOUND IN CROP PRODUCTION THIS YEAR. HOWEVER, IT ALSO SHOWS INCOMES DROPPING OFF AFTER 2013, BELOW THE 100 BILLION MARK AND STAYING THERE THROUGH THE NEXT DECADE.

NEW CROP:

WE CONTINUE THE NEW CROP SERIES THIS MORNING AS NATIONAL REPORTER TYNE MORGAN TAKES US TO MEET A UNIQUE YOUNG MAN IN SOUTHEASTERN WISCONSIN. IN HIS MID-30S, MICHAEL DANIELS HAS ALREADY BEEN FARMING FOR TWO DECADES. WHAT STARTED AS A FAMILY ENDEAVOR-- CHANGED, WHEN AT THE AGE OF 26, HE BECAME THE SOLE OPERATOR. AND AS YOU'LL SEE, GROWING WITH DIGNITY IS A MAINSTAY ON THE FARM.
