CALIFORNIA DROUGHT:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. DESPITE GLOBAL DEMAND FOR CALIFORNIA ALMONDS, SOME GROWERS ARE YANKING THOSE TREES FROM PRODUCTION BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF WATER.

DAIRY PRICES:

THE CALIFORNIA DAIRY INDUSTRY HAS IT'S OWN SET OF CHALLENGES...THATS INSPITE OF SOME HISTORICALLY STRONG PRICES. ANALYSTS SAY STRONG EXPORT DEMAND IS KEEPING MILK PRICES HIGHER. EXPORTS ON THE YEAR ARE UP NEARLY 20 PERCENT. WHEY AND POWDER ARE HELPING DRIVE THOSE PRICES...NOW A LOWER PRICES FOR CHEESE IS ALSO HELPING BUY BACK SOME WORLD DEMAND. IN CALIFORNIA THE BIGGEST IMPACTS COULD COME FROM THE HAY MARKET.

CALIFORNIA CATTLE:

A COUPLE WEEKS AGO NATIONAL BEEF ANNOUNCED PLANS TO CLOSE IT'S BRAWLEY CALIFORNIA PROCING FACILITY.  A GROUP OF CATTLE FEEDERS, THE CITY, THE COUNTY AND THE STATE ALL PUT TOGETHER INCENTIVES IN HOPES OF KEEPING THE PROCESSOR UP AND RUNNING. IMPERIAL VALLEY CATTLE FEEDERS EVEN OFFERED CATTLE PRICE DISCOUNTS.
HOWEVER, NATIONAL BEEF APPLAUDED THE EFFORTS BUT SAYS THE DECLINING SUPPLY OF FED CATTLE IS THE PROBLEM. AND ITS THE KEY DRIVER WHY THE PLANT WILL REMAIN SLATED FOR CLOSURE APRIL 4TH.

MILK LIFE:

IT'S A SLOGAN WE'VE GROWN TO ASSOCIATE WITH THE DAIRY INDUSTRY...SINCE 1993. THE PHRASE--GOT MILK-- IS GETTING THE BOOT FROM THE MILK PROCESSOR EDUCATION PROGRAM. OVER THE YEARS IT'S BECOME ONE OF THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE PHRASES IN ALL OF ADVERTISING. IN IT'S PLACE--MILK LIFE--NOW PART OF A NEW NATIONAL CAMPAIGN ROLLING OUT THIS WEEK. THE NEW 50 MILLION DOLLAR CAMPAIGN SHOWS LIQUID MILK POWERING DRINKERS DOING ACTIVITIES LIKE RUNNING, PLAYING BASKETBALL OR PLAYING MUSIC.

CROP WATCH:

A LITTLE WARM-UP AND THEN ANOTHER FREEZE. HERE'S MIKE HOFFMAN WITH CROPWATCH.

TRANS PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP:

THE TRANS-PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP IS THE SINGLE-MOST IMPORTANT TRADE NEGOTIATION EVER IN THE HISTORY OF U.S. AGRICULTURE AND THE ENTIRE U.S. ECONOMY - THAT'S ACCORDING TO NATIONAL PORK PRODUCERS COUNCIL VICE PRESIDENT AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE COUNSEL NICK GIORDANO.  THE TPP INCLUDES 12 COUNTRIES.
UNFORTUNATELY - GIORDANO SAYS THE CURRENT JAPANESE POSITION ON MARKET ACCESS FOR AGRICULTURE IS A STICKING POINT. JAPAN WANTS TO EXEMPT 586 TARIFF LINES FROM TARIFF ELIMINATION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION PLANS TO GIVE CONGRESS REASON TO APPROVE TRADE PROMOTION AUTHORITY BY NEGOTIATING A TRANS-PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT THEY CAN'T PASS UP. THAT'S ACCORDING TO U.S. TRADE REPRESENTATIVE MICHAEL FROMAN. HE SAYS THE VOTES ARE THERE AS LONG AS THE ADMINISTRATION BRINGS BACK A GOOD AGREEMENT.

OIL TRAINS:

RAILROADS THAT HAUL CRUDE OIL SHIPMENTS HAVE REACHED AN AGREEMENT WITH U-S TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALSS. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL ACCIDENTS INVOLVING OIL TRAINS. THE D-O-T URGED RAIL COMPANIES TO ADOPT WIDE-RANGING VOLUNTARY SAFETY MEASURES. ONE SUCH RULE CALLS FOR RAILROADS TO SLOW DOWN OIL TRAINS THROUGH MAJOR CITIES. THE GOVERNMENT ALSO WANTS INCREASED TRACK INSPECTIONS AND IMPROVED EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLANNING ALONG ROUTES THAT CARRY OIL. ACCORDING TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, THE AGREEMENT DOES NOT ADDRESS CONCERNS OVER ETHANOL.

ANALYSIS:

U.S. COLD STORAGE WAREHOUSES STOCKED A RECORD AMOUNT OF PORK LAST MONTH.
THAT'S ACCORDING TO THE LATEST USDA REPORT. NOW TWO MONTHS STRAIGHT IN RECORD TERRITORY--AS PROCESSES AND PACKERS ANTICIPATE TIGHTER SUPPLIES IN THE FUTURE DUE TO OUTBREAK OF PORCINE EPIDEMIC DIAREAH VIRUS. IT'S ALSO LED TO SOME PRETTY HEAFTY PRICES. FARM DIRECTOR AL PELL HAS MORE IN ANALYSIS.

SUNSPOTS:

IT'S BEEN A LONG WINTER FOR MANY FOLKS. BUT HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS - SPRING IS JUST FOUR WEEKS AWAY! BUT MIKE YOU THINK THIS SORT OF WINTER IS NOW IN A LONG-TERM PATTERN? THAT'S RIGHT CLINTON. AND IT'S DUE TO SUN-SPOTS. I TALKED WITH AN ASTROPHYSICIST FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME WHO EXPLAINS THE SCIENCE OF SUNSPOTS.

FOOD WASTE:

AS RECORD NUMBERS OF AMERICAN'S GO ON FOOD ASSISTANCE, A NEW REPORT FROM THE USDA IS ALMOST STAGGERING TO CONSIDER. AMERICAN'S WASTE NEARLY A THIRD OF ALL THE FOOD THEY PRODUCE.

GMO FREE CHEERIO:

RECENTLY GENERAL MILLS SAID IT'S CHEERIOS WERE GOING GMO-FREE.
