TODAY ON AGDAY

FEBRUARY 7, 2014

NCBA:

GOOD MORNING I'M TYNE MORGAN IN FOR CLINTON GRIFFITHS. AS A NATIONAL BEEF CONVENTION DRAWS TO A CLOSE, PRODUCERS ARE SETTING A GAME-PLAN TO REBUILD A DWINDLING HERD.

CALIFORNIA DROUGHT:

AS CALIFORNIA FARMERS HOPE FOR RAIN RELIEF, LEGISLATORS IN WASHINGTON PASSED A MEASURE TO HELP WITH THE WATER SHORTAGES IN THE STATE.

CROP WATCH:

THE NEWEST GOVERNMENT DATA SHOWS NO RELIEF FROM DROUGHT IN CALIFORNIA. MIKE HOFFMAN HAS DETAILS FROM THE AGDAY WEATHER-CENTER.

SEED CASE UPDATE:

WE HAVE AN UPDATE THIS MORNING ON A CASE OF INTERNATIONAL SEED ESPIONAGE. WE'VE BEEN FOLLOWING THIS STORY CLOSELY SINCE IT FIRST BROKE IN DECEMBER.

PROFIT BRIEFING:

PRESIDENT OBAMA IS SCHEDULED TO SIGN THE 2014 FARM BILL INTO LAW THIS MORNING WHILE SPEAKING AT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY. AMONG THE NEARLY ONE-THOUSAND PAGES, THE LAW MAKES SOME FUNDAMENTAL CHANGES FROM PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF FARM POLICY.

STRAWBERRY FREEZE:

FREEZING TEMPERATURES THAT PERSISTED THROUGH MUCH OF JANUARY HAS SET BACK THE STRAWBERRY CROP IN LOUISIANA. IT'S NOT A BIG CASH CROP FOR THE STATE, BUT FOR PEOPLE WHO RELY ON THE BERRIES, IT'S CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR END-USERS.
TOBIE BLANCHARD FROM THE LSU AGCENTER HAS DETAILS.

OLYMPIC YOGURT BAN:

AS THE WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES GET UNDERWAY IN SOCHI, RUSSIA, A TRADE DISPUTE IS ENTERING THE "OLYMPIC" ARENA. AND IT STEMS - FROM ALL THINGS - YOGURT. RUSSIAN AUTHORITIES ARE APPARENTLY BLOCKING A SHIPMENT OF CHOBANI GREEK YOGURT FROM ENTERING THE COUNTRY. IT WAS SENT THERE FOR U-S ATHLETES. THE U-S DAIRY EXPORT COUNCIL SAYS THE YOGURT IS BEING BLOCKED BECAUSE OF RUSSIA'S THREE YEAR EMBARGO ON U-S DAIRY PRODUCTS. AND THE NATIONAL MILK PRODUCERS FEDERATION SAYS WITH RUSSIA'S MEMBERSHIP IN THE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION, IT'S INCUMBENT ON THEM TO LIVE UP TO WTO TRADING OBLIGATIONS ON FUNDAMENTAL FOOD SAFETY REQUIREMENTS.

BARNS:

VERY FEW STRUCTURES BETTER REPRESENT THE HISTORY OF RURAL AMERICA THAN THE BARN. THEY SERVE AS A LINK TO OUR HERITAGE. THAT'S WHY WE ARE LAUNCHING A NEW WEEKLY SEGMENT TODAY CALLED "GREAT AMERICAN BARNS". WITH YOUR HELP, WE WILL SHOWCASE THESE ICONS. AL PELL TELLS US ABOUT ONE BARN IN SOUTHEAST WISCONSIN.
