TODAY ON AGDAY
JANUARY 17, 2013

MEETING:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. THE FOUR DAY FARM BUREAU ANNUAL MEETING IS NOW IN THE BOOKS...AND THE DELEGATES HAVE THEIR MARCHING ORDERS. AND IN SOME CASES, IT INVOLVES ENERGY.

RMA PAYOUTS RECORD:

AS EXPECTED U-S CROP INSURANCE INDEMNITIES FOR 2012 CROPS SET A NEW RECORD OF 11-AND-A-HALF BILLION DOLLARS. . .AND THERE ARE MORE CHECKS TO GO. THAT MARK SHATTERS THE RECORD SET IN 2011. ACCORDING TO DATA FROM THE RISK MANAGEMENT AGENCY SEVEN OF THE ELEVEN BILLION GOES TO PAY FOR LOST CORN CROPS. OUR PARTNERS AT PROFARMER NEWSLETTER SAY IT'S EXPECTED THE PAYOUT LEVELS COULD REACH 16 BILLION DOLLARS.

CITRUS FREEZE UPDATE:

MEANWHILE DAMAGE ASSESSMENTS ARE STILL BEING MADE IN CALIFORNIA'S PRIMARY CROP PRODUCTION AREA FOLLOWING FIVE DAYS OF RECORD COLD TEMPERATURES. AS WE'VE BEEN REPORTING, THE CENTRAL VALLEY - WHICH STRETCHES FROM FRESNO TO BAKERSFIELD - SAW TEMPS DIP INTO THE 20'S. CITRUS CROPS HAVE BEEN AT RISK, ESPECIALLY MANDARINS. FARMERS HAVE BEEN USING WIND MACHINES TO HELP PROTECT THE CROP. EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING, TEMPS WERE DOWN AGAIN - BUT NOT FOR AS LONG OF A PERIOD. WE TALKED WITH THE CALIFORNIA CITRUS MUTUAL ASSOCIATION WHICH REPRESENTS 39-HUNDRED GROWERS. C-C-M SAYS EARLY ASSESSMENTS SHOW SOME DAMAGE, BUT IN ISOLATED AREAS. THE FULL EXTENT WON'T BE KNOWN FOR WEEKS.

AUSSIE WEATHER:

IT'S NOT RECORD COLD, BUT RECORD HEAT IN AUSTRALIA. AND IT'S PUTTING STRESS ON SUMMER CROPS. USDA SAYS TRIPLE DIGIT HEAT SPREADS OVER SOUTHERN QUEENSLAND AND NEW SOUTH WALES, DRYLAND CROPS ARE STRUGGLING AND DEVELOPMENT OF IRRIGATED CROPS ISN'T MUCH BETTER, THE TEMPS ARE ENABLING WHEAT GROWERS TO GET AHEAD OF THE WINTER WHEAT HARVES.

CROP WATCH:

BACK HOME IT'S COLD AND STILL PLENTY DRY FOR MANY FARMERS. CINDI CLAWSON JOINS US THIS MORNING FOR CROPWATCH.
