JULY 22, 2014

OPEN HEADLINES:
COMING UP TODAY ON AGDAY CAN CHICKEN RULE THE ROOST...A NEW SURVEY SAYS CONSUMERS ARE BUYING MORE BIRDS FOR DINNER.THE U.S. DAIRY HERD IS GETTING BIGGER AND PUMPING MORE MILK.IN AGRIBUSINESS...HOW WILL U.S. SOYBEAN PRODUCTION IMPACT GLOBAL MARKETS. YOU COULD SEE A 10 MILLION METRIC TON INCREASE IN SOYBEAN PRODUCTION IN CHINA BUT SNAP OF A FINGER IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT. AND A CAMP DEDICATED TO SERVING AMERICA'S MILITARY FAMILIES. FUN IN THE BLUEGRASS STATE TODAY ON AGDAY…
CHICKEN CONSUMPTION:
GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS. AS BEEF AND PORK PRICES CONTINUE TO RISE WITH TIGHTER SUPPLIES, IT APPEARS THAT POULTRY IS BEGINNING TO "RULE THE ROOST" AT THE MEAT COUNTER.AND THAT'S OUR TOP STORY ON AGDAY.
MEAT UTTERBACK:
WE’LL BE OKAY FOR THIS YEAR, PROBABLY EVEN THE FIRST HALF OF '15, BUT YOU'VE GOT TO START THINKING BATTLE LINES. THE MARKET NEVER LETS YOU EASILY GET SHORT AT THE TOP OF A MARKET. AND YOU'VE GOT TO START THINKING PROTECTING AT LEAST YOUR FIRST HALF OF 2015, 2016 FROM EVENTUAL EXPANSION THAT HAPPENS. BECAUSE WHEN IT COMES, IT WILL COME FAST AND FURIOUS." THE LATEST U-S-D-A WORLD AGRICULTURAL SUPPLY AND DEMAND ESTIMATES JUSTIFY UTTERBACK'S THOUGHTS ON EXPANSION. THE AGENCY CITES LOWER FEED COSTS AS THE REASON WE COULD POULTRY NUMBERS SHOOT UP QUICKLY.
CROP PROGRESS:
THE LATEST CROP PROGRESS REPORT SHOWS THE CONDITION RATING OF THE NATION'S CORN CROP REMAINS VERY STRONG. 76-PERCENT IS GOOD TO EXCELLENT-UNCHANGED FROM LAST WEEK. 56-PERCENT OF THE CROP REACHED SILKING STAGE, A POINT AHEAD OF AVERAGE. SOYBEANS SHOW A ONE POINT IMPROVEMENT IN CONDITION FROM LAST WEEK. 73-PERCENT IS GOOD TO EXCELLENT IN THE TOP 18 SOY STATES. 19-PERCENT OF THE CROP IS SETTING PODS - TWO POINTS AHEAD OF AVERAGE. AND 60-PERCENT ARE AT BLOOM STAGE-FOUR POINTS AHEAD. LOOKING AT COTTON - 52-PERCENT IS GOOD TO EXCELLENT. 38-PERCENT ARE SETTING BOLLS, WHICH IS CLOSE TO AVERAGE. 85-PERCENT IS SQUARING.
AND WINTER WHEAT IS THREE QUARTERS CUT. HARVEST HAS WRAPPED-UP IN THE SOUTHERN PLAINS. CUTTERS ARE JUST NOW ROLLING IN MONTANA WITH FIVE PERCENT HARVESTED IN BIG SKY COUNTRY.
WASHINGTON WILDFIRE:
FIREFIGHTERS IN WASHINGTON STATE ARE HOPING TO GET THE UPPER HAND ON A WILDFIRE THAT'S BURNED HUNDREDS OF SQUARE MILES AND OVERTOOK A HERD THAT WAS ON SUMMER-GRAZING IN THE NEARBY MOUNTAINS. COOLER TEMPERATURES AND LIGHTER WINDS WERE FORECAST TO DESCEND ON THE STATE YESTERDAY AND TODAY. A RANCHER IN THE TOWN OF TWISP, WASHINGTON WAS UNABLE TO MOVE PART OF HIS HERD BEFORE THE FAST MOVING FIRES MOVED IN.
CROP WATCH:
CLINTON… MIKE HOFFMAN JOINS US FROM THE AGDAY WEATHER-CENTER WITH CROP CONDITIONS FROM THE CORNBELT AND A DEVASTATING PEST PROBLEM IN ARKANSAS,
GOOD MORNING MIKE.
CBI SHARING RULE:
THE USDA SAYS IT WON'T BE SHARING INFORMATION WITH STATE REGULATORS ABOUT GENETICALLY ENGINEERED ORGANISMS RELEASED IN THEIR JURISDICTIONS.
IN FEBRUARY 2013 - APHIS PROPOSED SHARING INFO ABOUT GMO FIELD TRIALS TAKING PLACE WITH LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.
USDA IS WITHDRAWING THE RULE BECAUSE IT FOUND POTENTIAL VULNERABILITIES THAT COULD HAVE PUT FARMERS AND BUSINESSES AT RISK.
BIOTECH CROPS:
NEW NUMBERS FROM USDA SHOW GMO CROPS CONTINUE TO HOLD FAVOR WITH U.S. FARMERS. MORE THAN 90 PERCENT OF CORN, SOYBEANS, AND COTTON ARE GENETICALLY ENGINEERED PLANTS.
DTR DANNON AFRICA:
IN OUR DAIRY TODAY REPORT, THE WORLD'S BIGGEST YOGURT MAKER, DANONE JUST BOUGHT A SIGNIFICANT STAKE IN BROOKSIDE DAIRY. BROOKSIDE IS LOCATED IN KENYA. DANONE SAYS IT’S HOPING TO CONTINUE EXPANING ITS PRESENCE IN AFRICA.
DTR MILK PRODUCTION:
HERE AT HOME, USDA'S MILK PRODUCTION NUMBERS ARE OUT FOR JUNE. IT SHOWS A BIG INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF COWS AND HOW MUCH MILK EACH ONE IS PUMPING OUT.
DTR MIDWEST MILK PREMIUMS:
MEANWHILE A NEW STUDY FROM THE MIDWEST DAIRY ASSOCIATION HOPES TO ATTRACT MORE DAIRYS TO THE MIDWEST. THE STUDY LOOKS AT FEED COSTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
IT FINDS THAT RATION EXPENSES ARE AMONG THE LOWEST IN THE U.S. AND MILK PRICE PREMIUM ARE OFTEN 25 TO 50 PERCENT HIGHER. MIDWESTERN MILK PRODUCTION FELL TO A 40 YEAR LOW, BACK IN 2004. IT’S GAINED SOME OF THAT BACK BUT STATES IN THE REGION ARE WORKING TO ATTRACT MORE DAIRIES BACK TO THE AREA.
TEASE:
STILL TO COME FARM DIRECTOR AL PELL LEADS THE DISCUSSION ON HOW A RECORD SOYBEAN CROP IN THE U-S WILL IMPACT THE BIGGEST BEAN-GROWING COMPETITORS IN SOUTH AMERICA.
ANALYSIS INTRO:
HERE AT THE AGRIBUSINESS DESK WE'RE TALKING TO GREG HUNT ARCHER FINANCIAL SERVICES GREG I WANT TO TALK ASK YOU ABOUT SOYBEANS BECAUSE THIS COUNTRY APPARENTLY IS GOING TO GROW MORE BEANS THAN HAS EVER GROWN THIS YEAR BUT HOW ABOUT THE OTHER COUNTRIES SOUTH AMERICA THEY GOING TO QUIT GROWING BEANS THEN. WELL LOOK YOU KNOW OBVIOUSLY THE BEAN CROP IS NOT MADE HERE YOU KNOW THAT BETTER THAN I . THAT'S TRUE. SO WERE GOING TO HAVE TO SEE HOW THEY FINISH OFF AND IF THERE EXTENDED YOU EXTENDED SEASON IN SOYBEANS YOU KNOW THE MARKET IS GOT THE ACRES THAT THAT ECONOMICALLY AND FINANCIALLY MADE SENSE AND THE FARMER OBVIOUSLY RESPOND TO THAT AND IT'S WE DO HAVE A 45 YIELD ALL I CAN SAY IS I THINK THAT THAT THAT MARKET HAS GOT SOME BIG POTENTIAL LEFT TO THE DOWNSIDE ON IT AND IT MIGHT NOW HAVE A REALIZING EFFECT AT THAT MOMENT WHEN WE SEE YOU KNOW SOME SORT OF A HARVEST LOW HERE IN THE US BUT WITH THE PRICE OF CORN WHERE IT'S AT IT'S GOING TO MAKE THE BRAZILIAN FARMER WHO GROWS CORN AWAY FROM PORT IN MATO GROSSO DO SOL FOR INSTANCE HE'S GOING TO BE LOOKING AT THE COST OF CORN BELOW PRODUCTION BELOW THEIR GOVERNMENT SUPPORT PRICE. RIGHT AND THAT'S GOING TO PROBABLY SWITCH TO MORE BEAN ACRES AND AS WE MOVE FORWARD IN CHINA AND OTHERS START SEEING A PATTERN CHANGE HERE AND MOST LIKELY THE SAME THING COULD OCCUR IN CHINA THAT'S THE ONE THAT I'M TRYING TO FIGURE HOW CHINA IS GOING TO GET UNDERNEATH THIS MASSIVE AMOUNT OF CORN STOCKS AND THERE LOOKS LIKE TO ME THE ONLY WAY IS THE IS THEIR STARTING TO USE MARKET MORE OF A MARKET ORDINATES SUPPORT PRICE MECHANISM THAT COULD EASILY SWITCH A LOT MORE BACK TO BEANS FROM CORN IN CHINA SO YOU COULD SEE A 10 MILLION METRIC TON INCREASE IN SOYBEAN PRODUCTION IN CHINA BUT SNAP OF A FINGER IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF COURSE. MORE BEANS NOT ALL THE UNITED STATES. YEA SO IT'S YOU KNOW SOMETHING OVERTIME TO LOOK AT SO ANYWAY THAT'S THE WAY IT LOOKS TO ME AT THE MOMENT. OKAY GREG HUNT ARCHER FINANCIAL SERVICE OUR GUEST HERE ON AGDAY BACK WITH MORE IN A MOMENT.

WX:
WELCOME BACK TO AGDAY, MIKE IT'S FUNNY HOW QUICKLY THINGS CAN CHANGE. WE WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT THE WEATHER AND ONE OF THE WETTEST JUNES EVER, AND NOW SPRINKLERS ARE RUNNING AROUND THE COUNTRY. THAT’S RIGHT I NOTICED SOME ON MY TRIP ACROSS THE LOWER GREAT LAKES THIS WEEKEND AND I’M SURE YOU'VE SEEN IT OUT AND ABOUT TOO. THAT’S TRUE. GIVE US A WEEK OR TEN DAYS OF NOTHING AND YOU'RE GOING TO TART WATERING THINGS THAT'S WHAT YOU’RE SEEING. AND THIS NEXT FRONT, EVEN THOUGH IT'S GOING TO PRODUCE SOME DECENT RAINS, WHERE IT HIT SIN UPPER MIDWEST AND GREAT LAKES, IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT'S GOING TO BRING WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAINS AS IT MOVES SOUTHEAST. STATIONARY FRONT IN THE SOUTHEASTERN PART OF COUNTRY WILL PRODUCE SOME DECENT SHOWERS AN STORMS IN THAT AREA. AND VERY CLOSE TO THIS AREA OF LOW PRESSURE OUR COMPUTER MODEL HAS A VERY FAIR AMOUNT OF RAIN WITH IT AS WELL. MAY EVEN BE A COMPLEX OF THUNDERSTORMS OUT OF THIS ONE OVER 24 HOUR PERIOD IT BRINGS A LOT OF RAIN. BUT THAT WILL ONLY BE TOM SOME AREAS. YOU’LL NOTICE EVEN LATE THIS AFTERNOON OUR MODEL ISN'T SHOWING A LOT ALONG COLD FRONT WHICH IS UNUSUAL BECAUSE IT'S FAIRLY HUMID OUT AHEAD OF IT. COOLER, DRYER WEATHER COMING IN BEHIND IT…YOU CAN SEE AS WE HEAD THROUGH TONIGHT IT DOES MOISTEN UP A LITTLE BIT WITH SOME AREAS OF THUNDERSTORMS ALONG IT. FRONTAL SYSTEM COMING INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST PRODUCING SOME MOISTURE FOR A CHANGE, AS WELL, WHICH HASN'T BEEN HAPPENING A LOT LATELY. AND A STATIONARY FRONT WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE FOCUS FOR SOME MAINLY AFTERNOON SHOWERS AND STORMS THROUGH THE SOUTHEAST. NOW LETS TAKE A LOOK AT PRECIPITATION ESTIMATES OVER PAST 24 HOURS. YOU CAN SEE MOST OF CORNBELT STAYING DRY AGAIN OVER THE PAST 24 HOURS BUT THE NEXT 36 WE WILL SEE A FEW SPOTS MAINLY IOWA EASTWARD WITH AREAS INTO THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY GETTING SOME SHOWERS AND STORMS. SOME POCKETS MIGHT GET AN INCH OR MORE. BUT LIKE I SAID I DON'T SEE A WIDESPREAD RAIN OUT OF THE FRONTAL SYSTEM BUT WE MIGHT GET A COMPLEX UP IN THE FARM NORTHERN PARTS OF COUNTRY. AND AN ACCUMULATION OVER SOUTHEAST…SOME AREAS GETTING TWO TO THREE INCHES OVER TWO DAY PERIOD THERE... HIGH TEMPS BLASTING INTO THE 90S TODAY... HAVEN’T SEEN A MAP LIKE THIS VERY OFTEN THIS SUMMER... BUT IT'S NOT GOING TO LAST. THE NEXT FRONT COMING SOUTHWARD THAT WILL SHOVE THOSE 90S FARTHER SOUTH AND LOWS TONIGHT STILL PRETTY MUGGY ST LOUIS SOUTHWARD BUT TURNING COOLER AGAIN ACROSS THE UPPER MIDWEST AND THE 90S GET PUSHED DOWN INTO OKLAHOMA IT LOOKS LIKE BY TOMORROW WITH 70S AND 80S COMING IN BEHIND THE FRONT FOR THE GREAT LAKES AND NORTHERN PLAINS, TAKING A LOOK AT JET STREAM YOU CAN SEE THE RIDGE IS BUILT EASTWARD BUT THAT'S GOING TO BE CUT DOWN JUST LIKE MODEL SHOWED LAST WEEK THE TROPH DIGGING IN AND SECONDARY TROPH DIVING IN AS WE HEAD INTO THE WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. LOOK AT THAT, A CUT OFF LOW AGAIN OVER THE GREAT LAKES. THAT COULD BE PRETTY COOL BY EARLY NEXT WEEK. THAT’S A LOOK ACROSS THE COUNTRY. NOW LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT LOCAL FORECAST. FOR SPOKANE WASHING, VARIABLE CLOUDY COULD BE SHOWER IN SOME SPOTS, HIGH OF 79 DEGREES. COLEMAN TEXAS BECOMING SUNNY HOT AND HUMID, HIGH OF 99…AND FINALLY MANSFIELD OHIO, MOSTLY SUNNY, WARM AND HUMID, HIGH OF 88…
ITC MILITARY CAMP:
SINCE 2009, THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE HAS BEEN OFFERING SUPPORT TO MILITARY FAMILIES. ONE WAY IS THROUGH MILITARY FAMILY CAMPS OFFERED A COUPLE OF TIMES OVER THE SUMMER AT NO COST TO THOSE FAMILIES. THE CAMPS GREW FROM A FOCUS ON CHILDREN AND YOUTH, BY REACHING OUT TO FAMILIES THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE DEPLOYMENT CYCLE. IN THIS REPORT PROVIDED BY THE U-K COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE, JEFF FRANKLIN SAYS ALL THAT THE MILITARY FAMILIES WERE REQUIRED TO DO WAS SHOW UP AND HAVE A GOOD TIME.
ITC TAG:
THE MILITARY FAMILY WEEKENDS ARE MADE POSSIBLE THANKS TO A DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE GRANT FOR DEPLOYMENT SUPPORT CAMPS. FOOD AND YOUR FAMILY IS NEXT.
FOOD SCARE:
IN FOOD AND YOUR FAMILY, A U-S BASED MEAT SUPPLIER IS COMING UNDER FIRE AFTER CHINESE OFFICIALS FOUND THE COMPANY WAS SELLING EXPIRED MEAT TO TWO MAJOR FAST FOOD CHAINS.
OBESITY RATES:
CLINTON…STUDIES HAVE SHOWN AMERICA IS THE UNHEALTHIEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.
BUT A NEW REPORT SHOWS THE OBESITY RATE AMONG GEN-Z ISN'T GETTING WORSE.
CLOSE:
CLINTON…THAT'S ALL THE TIME WE HAVE THIS MORNING. WE'RE GLAD YOU TUNED IN.
