TODAY ON AGDAY

SEPTEMBER 10, 2013

CROP REPORT:

GOOD MORNING I'M CLINTON GRIFFITHS.  ANOTHER WEEK, MORE HEAT AND ONE STEP CLOSER TO SUMMER CROP HARVEST. BUT HOW MUCH CROP IS ACTUALLY OUT THERE? USDA GIVES US ITS BEST GUESS LATER THIS WEEK.

CROP PROGRESS:

IN THE MEANTIME, THE USDA'S LATEST CROP PROGRESS REPORT CAME OUT MONDAY.
IT SHOWS, CONDITIONS OF THE MAJOR CROPS CONTINUE TO DECLINE. 54 PERCENT OF THE NATION'S CORN IS NOW CALLED GOOD TO EXCELLENT. A COUPLE OF TICKS LOWER THAN LAST WEEK. IN IOWA IT'S JUST A THIRD OF THE CROP. COMPARE THAT WITH OHIO WHERE 80 PERCENT OF THE CORN IS RATED GOOD TO EXCELLENT. LESS THAN 10 PERCENT STANDS MATURE. THE NATION'S SOYBEANS ARE ALSO 52 PERCENT GOOD TO EXCELLENT. TWO POINTS DOWN FROM LAST WEEK. ONLY A THIRD OF IOWA AND MISSOURI'S CROPS ARE THAT GOOD. 11 PERCENT OF THE CROP IS DROPPING LEAVES. AND IT MAY SEEM EARLY BUT WINTER WHEAT PLANTING IS UNDERWAY. 5 PERCENT OF THE CROP IS NOW IN THE GROUND. RIGHT ON TRACK WITH THE FIVE YEAR AVERAGE.

LSU SOYBEANS:

LOUISIANA FARMERS ARE HARVESTING ABOUT A MILLION ACRES OF SOYBEANS THIS FALL. THAT'S DOWN SLIGHTLY FROM LAST YEAR. UNLIKE THE MIDWEST, WHICH IS STRUGGLING THROUGH A LATE SUMMER DROUGHT, LOUISIANA BEAN YIELDS LOOK EVERY BIT AS PROMISING AS LAST YEARS RECORD CROP IN THE PELICAN STATE. TOBIE BLANCHARD HAS DETAILS IN THIS REPORT PROVIDED BY THE LSU AGCENTER.

CROP WATCH

A YIELD-ROBBING PLANT DISEASE IS KEEPING CROP SCOUTS BUSY IN THE SOUTHEAST. MIKE HOFFMAN HAS DETAILS THIS MORNING IN CROPWATCH.
