Around 80% of 2013 Crop to be Stored

How much grain will stay on-farm this season? The Farm Journal Pulse provides some insight.

Slightly more than 10% of the U.S. corn crop has been harvested, according to USDA’s Sept. 30 Crop Progress report. The five-year average for this time of the year is 23% harvested. North Carolina has the most corn harvested, with 85% complete.

For soybeans, 11% of the crop has been harvested, which compares to a five-year average of 20%. Louisiana leads the nation in soybean harvest progress, with 68% harvested.

So, where is all this grain headed after it’s picked from the field? More than 1,400 farmers and ranchers shared their storage plans for this year’s crops in this week’s Farm Journal Pulse. The question was: What percentage of your 2013 crop production will you store on farm?

Only 21% of respondents plan to not store any of their 2013 production, while 16% said they will store 100%.

  • None: 21%
  • 1-25%: 10%
  • 26-50%: 12%
  • 51-75%: 20%
  • 76-99%: 21%
  • 100%: 16%
