Biodiesel production reached a record 111 million gallons in May, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports. The previous record of 109 million gallons happened in December 2011.
Year-to-date biodiesel production is up about 4% over levels in 2012, the EIA says. Of the millions of pounds of feedstocks consumed for biodiesel production, about 54% were soybean oil.
Most biodiesel fuel is used for transportation, having been blended with diesel fuel that is derived from petroleum.
