Can Soybeans Turn it Around in August?

Bill Bauer, B&M Crop Consulting, provides a soybean crop update from the 2013 Corn College events in Coldwater, Mich.

The 2013 soybean crop has had its fair share of challenges. Most of the crop was planted late and in less-than-ideal conditions.

August is commonly known as the "bean" month. But, will that play out this year?

As of July 21 (updated reports will come out today at 4 p.m. CDT), 46% of the U.S. soybean crop is blooming, which is significantly behind the five-year average of 59% by this time. Only 8% of the crop is setting pods; the average amount is 19% by July 21.

Bill Bauer, B&M Crop Consulting, says variable moisture has also been a challenge for this year crop. Regardless, the crop in his area of south-central Michigan, the crop looks good.

He provides an update from the test plots that will host Farm Journal's Corn College and Soybean College events this week:

"The bean crop is transitioning from the full blossoming to pod development," he says "The beans are going to put on a little more vegetative growth, but we’re not going to gain a lot more height at this point."

Soybean plant height will definitely need to be addressed at harvest this year. Bauer says farmers need to adjust header height to make sure they are running as close to the ground as possible, to pick up all the pods.
