Dow AgroSciences LLC, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, and M.S. Technologies LLC announced they have selected Enlist E3 soybeans as the brand name for the industry’s first-ever three-gene, herbicide-tolerant soybean. This technology is expected to be launched in 2015 pending U.S. and import country approval. The companies report that Enlist E3 soybeans will be brought to market in high-yielding varieties and be available in multiple brands for farmers who want to improve weed control and yields. The Enlist E3 soybeans will include three herbicide-tolerant genes stacked together as part of a single genetic event in the soybean genome. These genes will provide tolerance to glyphosate, glufosinate and Dow’s new 2,4-D product.
Sulfur and Boron Join Forces
H.J. Baker & Bro., Inc., and its Tiger-Sul Products subsidiary have launched Tiger Boron 2%, a first-ever combination of sulfur and boron in an applicationfriendly, homogeneous pastille. The pastille is designed to blend with similar sized particles of macronutrients, eliminating opportunities for segregation during application.
Sulfur is integral to protein synthesis, chlorophyll transport and nitrogen use, all of which contribute to higher crop yields. Boron is essential for nitrogen fixation, as it regulates oxygen in legume nodules and plays a structural role in cell wall development and maintenance.
"Many soils are borondeficient. Even in soils with high organic matter, the boron may not be available to the plant," says Wes Haun, an agronomist with Tiger-Sul. "Without sulfur, boron applications on high-pH soils may be less effective. High-pH soils limit boron uptake; however, sulfur creates microsites of lower pH to enhance the plant’s ability to use micronutrients efficiently."
