The impact of the drought continued to make its presence known as Pro Farmer Midwest Crop Tour scouts made their way into Iowa this morning.
The Western Tour
Scouts on the western leg of the Tour finished out Nebraska yesterday, and Pro Farmer editor Chip Flory says crop conditions in that state were troublesome.
"Condition did improve from what we saw in northeast Nebraska, but the dryland corn in southeast Nebraska is still not good," Flory says. "Kernel size is going to be a major issue on the corn crop there, and it will impact how well the yield calculates and how accurate it will be."
He says irrigated corn fared better, but yield estimates were still disappointing.
"That's just evidence that you can fight drought with irrigation but you cannot fight the heat," Flory says.
Soybean yields were down as well, and Flory says that the crop needs rain now if it's going to pull through.
"This bean crop just did not handle the heat of this summer very well," he says.

The Eastern Tour
Meanwhile, Pro Farmer senior market analyst Brian Grete says conditions observed on the eastern leg of the Tour in Indiana yesterday didn't change much from those seen in Ohio.
