Farmers Receive Corn College Tune Up Lesson

February 24, 2011

At the 2011 National Farm Machinery Show, Farm Journal Field Agronomists Ken Ferrie and Missy Bauer gave attendees two 90-minute seminars to prepare them for the challenges of the upcoming crop year. The Corn College Tune Up events served as agronomic clinics with information on management zones and nitrogen management.

“To maximize yields, we have to know where in the field we can fine tune our management,” says Ferrie.
He and Bauer advocate farmers using soil tests, RTK elevation data, NDVI imagery and calibrated yields maps to develop and refine management zones.
“The grid map was a good place to start, but with variable rate technology we need to respect soil types and use today’s technologies,” Bauer says.
With nitrogen management, the agronomists says farmers must respect the ways we lose applied nitrogen in the field.
“If there’s an easy part of the nitrogen cycle, it’s understanding loss,” Bauer says.
Volitization occurs when nitrogen is lost as an ammonia gas. Denitrification only happens in saturated soils, particularly in warm saturated soils, when bacteria convert nitrate into nitrogen gas that is lost. Leaching is the loss of soluble nitrate down the soil profile.
To help farmers take their corn yields to the next level, Farm Journal is extending the lineup of Corn College events with Ferrie and Bauer. Check out the upcoming events below:
