Foundation For the Future Progress

January 14, 2011

The following update by the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) on its Foundation for the Future dairy policy proposal was released this morning in an e-mail blast from Jerry Kozak, NMPF president and CEO.  –Dairy Today editors

With the new Congress in place and preparing for a busy year ahead in Washington D.C., NMPF continues to promote the need for a major change in dairy policy, one that reflects the specifics of its Foundation for the Future program.

Since our last update, NMPF President and CEO Jerry Kozak met with the new Republican Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, Frank Lucas of Oklahoma, who has indicated a desire to address dairy policy this year. Kozak also met separately with the Agriculture Committee's top Democrat, Collin Peterson of Minnesota, who likewise expressed interest in working with NMPF toward a new dairy policy.

NMPF is working to put the specifics of the Foundation for the Future program into legislative form so that members of Congress can have the legislation evaluated for its costs and economic impact. The legislation drafting process should be completed by the end of January.
Meanwhile, NMPF continues to reach out to other key groups within the dairy producer community to compare notes on the best way to achieve an economically- and politically-positive outcome for dairy farmers, and look for a common ground to proceed with a unified position.

At this week's American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Meeting, delegates to the national meeting took a series of votes that closely align the Farm Bureau's posture with the tenets of Foundation for the Future. Likewise, members of the USDA's Dairy Industry Advisory Committee also made recommendations on several policy options that parallel the intentions of Foundation for the Future.

Earlier this week, the Foundation for the Future Federal Order Subcommittee also met to continue the process of fleshing out specific details about reforming the Federal Milk Marketing Order system.

As a reminder, NMPF has created a narrated PowerPoint presentation explaining Foundation for the Future, which is available for download at FutureforDairy.com, or CD-ROM. The presentation includes the slides, as well as the audio narrative used by Jerry Kozak at the NMPF Town Hall meeting in Reno last October, and is a useful tool for explaining, in detail, the various aspects of Foundation for the Future with producers.

The presentation is available as a downloadable zip file on FutureForDairy.com. By following the instructions, you can download and save the PowerPoint presentation to your computer. You may also send us a request to have a CD-ROM of the presentation in PowerPoint sent to you. If PowerPoint isn't an option, you can also request a video format mailed to you by completing the online request form, or by contacting NMPF directly at 703-243-6111, or info@nmpf.org.
