Glanbia Cuts 50 Workers, Milk Supply Lagging

January 23, 2014 06:14 AM

The cheese producer Glanbia has laid off about 50 workers from four southern Idaho plants after the company was unable to purchase as much milk as it did last year.

The Times-News reports Glanbia President Jeff Williams said the company has lost about 10 percent of its milk supply. But Williams said demand for cheese remains strong, which makes the layoffs and limited milk supply more painful.

Brent Olmstead with Milk Producers of Idaho says Idaho dairy production dropped only slightly compared to last year, and Glanbia is likely getting squeezed by other competitors, such as Chobani.

William said he hopes the cuts won't be long-term.
