Know Your Yield Monitor

August 3, 2011
By: Margy Eckelkamp, Director of Content Development, Machinery Pete

Different yield monitors require different calibration procedures, explains Corn College presenter Brad Beutke.

"GreenStar mnoitors can’t post-calibrate so farmers need to be on top of getting their monitor set with different test weights and variety changes," Beutke says. "With Ag Leader and Case IH, operators need to train the flow sensor with multiple calibrations at different loads."
But no matter what system you use, the top priority is to produce a well-defined map that has proper spatial variability.
"Knowing the correct number of bushels isn’t as important as knowing where bushels came from in the field," Beutke says. "Once we have a well-defined map with spatial variability we can use that map to create management zones and have the map also as a scouting tool."
