After seeing a series of central Illinois farms sell between $10,000 to $14,000 this year, this sale near Stonington in Christian County certainly grabbed our attention. It featured 160 prime acres offered in two 80-acre tracts. Tillable cropland for the whole farm was 158 acres -- your classic "flat and black" central Illinois farm. The productivity index (PI) for the entire farm was 138.9 with 147 the maximum rating per Bulletin 811.
Prior to the July 15 auction, we had seen farms with PI ratings in excess of 140 bring $14,000, sometimes pushing $14,500 an acre. This farm did not quite cross that 140 mark. The nine-year yield history on this farm was 188 bu. per acre for corn and 55 bu. per acre for soybeans.
Selling price was $15,900 an acre with the winning bidder taking the entire 160 acres.
Handling the sale was William Beck Auction & Realty, Edinburg, Ill., 217-519-0309.
