Pick the Right Tillage Tool

January 15, 2012
By: Margy Fischer, Farm Journal Machinery Editor and Test Plot Director

In episode 7 of Corn College TV Season 2, go to the field with Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie as he demonstrates how to properly run two types of tillage tools.

“First, farmers need to know what they want to achieve with the tillage pass, because tools are designed to do specific things,” he explains.
For example, an in-line ripper is designed to aid water infiltration by resetting the soil profile. It doesn’t mix residue but rather can look like no-till.
Another tool used in this demonstration is a hybrid chisel.
Watch the episode below to dig in the details with Ferrie in the field.
