Scholar Athletes Get Milk Mustaches and $7,500

A two-page spread in the A Section of USA Today Friday announces the 2012 "Scholarship Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year" (SAMMY) winners—25 high school students from Maine to Washington and 23 states in between.

The high school seniors must have a minimum grade point of 3.0 and excel in sports. Winners were chosen by five nationally known athletes: Tennis pro Andy Roddick, 12-time Olympic swimming medalist Dara Torres, pro skateboarder Tony Hawk, L.A. Clippers basketball pro Chauncey Billups, and two-time Olympic softball medalist Jennie Finch.

The winners include: Miceile Barrett, Delaplane, Va.; Sarah Bennion, Medford, Ore.; Mary Carmack, Veazie, Me.; Garrett Gosse, Las Vegas, Nev.; Zane Gouker, Lakeside, Ariz.; Michelle Greeneway, Sheboygan, Wis.; Megan Herring, Missoula, Mont.; Logan Hilton, Alexandria, La.; Darwin Hsu, Troy, Mich.; Julissa Hunte, Rio Rancho, N.M.; Noama Iftekhar, Santa Clara, Calif.; Steph Jackson, Naperville, Ill.; Emily A. King, Westport, Wash.; Corey Laughlin, Pueblo, Colo.; Dion Low, Valparaiso, Ind.; Jennifer Susan Mears, Vernon, Cont.; Dalton C. Meier, Elm Creek, Neb.; Aunjanna’ Million, Middleton, Ohio; Jahan Mirchandani, Floral Park, N.Y.; Jasmine Mobley, Austin, Tex.; Christopher Moroz, Thomaston, Geor.; Richare Max Reinertsen, Esko, Minn.; Tanner Satterthwaite, Norman, Okla.; Katherine Stone, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and David Trompke, Eagle, Ida.

The SAMMY winners each receive a $7,500 scholarship and an awards weekend at Walt Disney World Resort. The program is sponsored by the Milk Processors Education Program. More information on the SAMMY can be found here.
