This mural inside the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D., was photographed in 2013 when the facility honored the theme, “We Celebrate.”

King Corn’s Midwest Palace

Written by Nate Birt and Sara Brown

Since 1892, the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D., has hosted an ongoing celebration of corn, as well as high school basketball games and an annual fall festival.

Each year, more than 500,000 tourists visit the Corn Palace to learn about agriculture from the routinely updated murals made entirely of corn. Thirteen different colors of corn are used to decorate the facility, nailed ear by ear until designs are complete.

Inside, exhibits describe the types of corn grown in the U.S. and their usage. Visitors can purchase corn-themed memorabilia, food products and more.

The 2014 theme is "Remember When" and includes scenes such as a 1960s-style soda fountain and filling station, a farmer traversing a corn field on his tractor, a newsboy and more.

The Corn Palace is open Monday through Saturday, January to March, and daily from April to November. For information, visit www.CornPalace.com.
