profi Celebrates Two Decades

In a room packed with farm equipment company executives from around the world, profi—a German-based magazine devoted to independent machinery coverage—celebrated its 20th anniversary at Agritechnica in Hanover, Germany. Taking a lighthearted approach, the magazine editors poked fun at themselves and their serious approach to testing and reporting on machinery.

From the first issue in December 1989, profi has taken a Consumer Reports–type approach to covering farm equipment. In typical German fashion, exact planning went into deciding what the magazine would cover and how. As a result, key subject areas, such as tractor tests, driving impressions and technology, still exist today.

Teaming with the DLG (German Agricultural Society), profi tests tractors at an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) test station similar to the one at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. However, the test protocol goes beyond standard tests and includes factors to help farmers fully evaluate machines.

As tractors evolved into high-tech machines with sophisticated transmissions, profi helped pioneer a test procedure at the DLG called PowerMix.

In addition to testing tractors, profi evaluates combines, forage harvesters, seeding equipment and virtually every type of farm equipment on the market. The tests remain a hallmark of the monthly magazine.

In recent years, two new areas of coverage—machinery management and biofuels—were added to reflect the changes in agriculture.

A content-sharing joint venture with Farm Journal brings tractor tests and other information to the U.S.
