Soil-Mapping Tools

D a pHDetectorVeris Technologies introduces two new compact soil sensors, the pH Detector and the Quad EC1000, to use with ATVs. The pH Detector rapidly maps pH variability on a small grid or at several locations within management zones. The pH probe is inserted in the soil with an  easy-push mechanism. In about 10 seconds, a geo-referenced pH measurement is recorded on the Veris Data Logger. The pH Detector retails for $6,000.

D b Quad1000The Quad EC1000 is a soil electrical conductivity mapping system. It features four tine-mounted disks—two for injecting electrical current and two for measuring the voltage drop in the top 12" of soil. The new system is ideal for developing management zones and variable-rate seed population prescriptions. It retails for $9,600.

Telematics Via Remote Connection

A new technology offering from John Deere Ag Management Solutions remotely connects farmers to their equipment in the field. The JDLink telematics system allows for real-time alerts and other machine information, such as location, usage, performance and maintenance, to be accessed on the JDLink website or sent via e-mail or text message. The Select and Ultimate packages offered in 2011 will help farmers make better decisions regarding equipment use, logistics and performance to improve farm productivity and efficiency. local John Deere dealership or visit www.johndeere.com.

Built-tough Handheld Computer

B Nomad 900To enhance field-to-office connectivity, the Trimble Nomad 900 handheld computer series offers an ultrafast processor, 5-megapixel auto-focus camera, improved GPS operation and Wi-Fi capability. The computers provide top-of-the-line performance with a 5200-mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery, up to 6 GB of flash memory and a sunlight-visible VGA touch-screen display. The Nomad 900 Series is built tough to handle drops, vibration and extreme temperatures. Users can also take advantage of the CompactFlash and Secure Digital slots that are available for additional devices, such as SD/SDHC memory and RFID. The Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, which features a redesigned user interface, enhanced security, simpler e-mail and

Bluetooth setup, is standard on the computers. Visit www.trimble.com/nomad to learn more about the handheld technology.

Mobile Soil Map

A new smartphone application is available to let farmers access soil survey information in the field. The SoilWeb app provides GPS-based, real-time access to USDA–Natural Resources Conservation Service soil survey data. Query results are presented as a series of soil profile sketches, depicting soil horizons, series names, landscape position and taxonomic classification. Clicking on a soil name provides profiles of soil chemical and physical properties, land classification indices, land-use interpretations and links to other environmental databases. The app is available to download for free for iPhone, iTouch and Android devices.
