JOHN’S OPEN:

HELLO AND WELCOME TO U-S FARM REPORT, I'M JOHN PHIPPS. I HAVE BAD NEWS FOR CORONA BEER DRINKERS. THANKS TO DISEASE AND ORGANIZED CRIME, THE LIME SLICE YOU STUFF DOWN THE NECK OF THE BOTTLE MAY SOON COST MORE THAN THE BEER. CITRUS GREENING, THE SAME THREAT WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT WITH DOMESTIC ORANGES, AND BAD WEATHER IN MEXICO HAVE CREATED AN UNPRECEDENTED SHORTAGE AND QUADRUPLED THE PRICE OF LIMES. BUT IT GETS WORSE. WITH 95 PERCENT OF OUR LIMES COMING FROM MEXICO THIS NEW PRECIOUS COMMODITY HAS ATTRACTED THE ATTENTION OF THE FAMED MEXICAN CARTELS WITH PRODUCE TRUCK HIJACKING AND ORCHARD RAIDS. OTHER FRUITS ARE AT RISK AS WELL. SERIOUSLY, WE COULD SOON SEE A MOVIE VILLIAN SAY SOMETHING LIKE, "LOOK, JUST HANDOVER THE MANGOES AND NOBODY GETS HURT."

HEADLINES:

DESPITE FEARS OF CONSUMER PRICE RESISTANCE, ONE FIRM SEES CATTLE PRICES SHOOTING EVEN HIGHER IN 2014. RABOBANK'S FOOD & AGRIBUSINESS RESEARCH TEAM SAYS BEEF MARKET FUNDAMENTALS REMAIN POSITIVE, AND THAT'S CAUSED PRICES TO ALREADY SHOOT HIGHER AROUND THE GLOBE IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF THIS YEAR. MEANWHILE, A TRADE AGREEMENT BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND JAPAN THIS WEEK COULD HURT U-S BEEF EXPORTS. THE PACT WILL FORCE JAPAN TO GRADUALLY PHASE OUT ITS NEARLY 40 PERCENT TARIFFS ON AUSTRALIAN BEEF, BUT DOESN'T ELIMINATE TARIFFS ON ALL GOODS. THE JAPAN AG MINISTRY PROJECTS THE DEAL COULD HURT U-S BEEF EXPORTS TO JAPAN BY AS MUCH AS 80 PERCENT IF NO TRANS PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT IS REACHED. NATIONAL CATTLEMAN'S BEEF ASSOCIATION SPOKE OUT SAYING THIS TRADE DEAL UNDERMINES THE IDEALS OF THE T-P-P. A NEW FEDERAL VOLUNTARY FOOD LABELING ACT HAS BEEN INTRODUCED IN THE HOUSE. AND THIS TIME, IT'S GARNERING SUPPORT FROM GROUPS LIKE AMERICAN FARM BUREAU AND THE NATIONAL CORN GROWERS ASSOCIATION. A GROUP OF BIPARTISAN CONGRESSMAN AND WOMEN INTRODUCED H-R 44-32, WHICH IS CALLED THE SAFE AND ACCURATE FOOD LABELING ACT. IT WOULD ESTABLISH FEDERAL STANDARDS FOR VOLUNTARILY LABELING OF GENTICALLY MODIFIED FOODS. THE PROPOSAL ALSO MAKES IT CLEAR THAT THE F-D-A IS THE TOP AUTHORITY WHEN IT COMES TO GMO LABELING. MEXICO IS OPENING ALL OF ITS DOORS TO U-S SPUD SALES IN JUNE. AND THE NATIONAL POTATO COUNCIL SAYS THAT COULD MORE THAN TRIPLE FRESH POTATO SALES TO THE COUNTRY. U-S EXPORTS HAD BEEN LIMITED TO A 16-MILE ZONE ALONG THE U-S/MEXICO BORDER. THE COUNCIL SAYS THAT COULD INCREASE THE VALUE OF FRESH POTATO EXPORTS FROM 30 MILLION DOLLARS TO 100 MILLION DOLLARS. MEXICO IS ONE OF THE TOP FOUR IMPORTERS OF U-S SPUDS.

TUMBLEWEEDS:

IT'S LIKE A SCENE OUT OF A WESTERN - TUMBLWEEDS TAKING OVER THE LAND. IN THIS CASE, IT'S A REAL PROBLEM FOR THOSE IN THE SOUTHWEST. IN RURAL COLORADO, THE WEEDS BLOCK MILES OF ROAD, IRRIGATION DITCHES AND HAVE EVEN INVADED SUBDIVISIONS. THE WEEDS FLOURISHED LAST YEAR ON RANGELAND WAS LEFT DRY FROM YEARS OF DROUGHT. AND AS THE WEEDS BREAK OFF, THERE'S NO STOPPING THEM.

AG DRONES:

UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES, OR UAV'S, HAVE BECOME A POPULAR ITEM WITHIN AGRICULTURE. BUT THE RULES AND REGULATIONS AROUND THE SYSTEMS ARE A BIT CLOUDY. LATER THIS YEAR THE FAA- IS EXPECTED TO PROPOSE RULES ON DRONES THAT WEIGH LESS THAN 55 POUNDS. DESPITE THE UNCERTAINTY, NATIONAL REPORTER TYNE MORGAN MET A DRONE MAKER WHOSE BUSINESS IS TAKING OFF.

BAXTER BLACK:

THERE ARE TIMES NONE OF US LIKE TO BE DISTURBED. BUT FOR RANCHERS, SOME MAKE A CAREER OUT OF DISTURBING OTHERS. BAXTER BLACK EXPLAINS.

FOOD DESSERT:

FOOD DESERTS ARE POPPING UP IN SMALL TOWNS ACROSS THE MIDWEST. A FOOD DESERT IS DEFINED AS AN URBAN OR RURAL COMMUNITY WITHOUT EASY ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE AND NUTRITIOUS FOOD. A SMALL MISSOURI TOWN HAS LIVED THE FOOD DESERT CHALLENGE FOR MORE THAN 5 YEARS. BUT THANKS TO HELP FROM M-U EXTENSION, THE TOWN IS BACK ON THE MAP. SHANNON YOKLEY WITH MU EXTENSION HAS OUR STORY.

TRACTOR TALES:

WELCOME BACK. AL, ARE WE HEADING ANYWHERE WARM FOR TRACTOR TALES THIS WEEK?  WELL, JOHN, IT WAS WARMER WHEN WE WERE THERE. BUT YOU'LL LIKE THIS JOHN DEERE 50 BECAUSE IT HAS SOME INTERESTING ATTACHEMENTS.

CHURCH SALUTE:

TODAY'S COUNTRY CHURCH SALUTE GOES TO LIMA CHURCH IN FAYETTE, IOWA. THIS LITTLE CHURCH SEATS 120 PEOPLE. THE STRUCTURE WAS ORGINALLY CONTRUCTED BY ENGLISH, WELSH AND SCOTTISH SETTLERS IN 1882.  WHILE THE INSIDE OF THE CHURCH MAY BE MODEST, THE WHITE BUILDING BOASTS ATTRACTIVE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS FOR THOSE TO ENJOY BOTH INSIDE AN DOUT. OUR THANKS TO PATRCIA BAUMLER FOR SHARING THEIR STORY.

MAILBAG:

TIME NOW FOR OUR WEEKLY LOOK INSIDE THE FARM REPORT MAILBAG. OUR EMAIL TODAY HAS A SIMPLE ANSWER, SO LET'S GET TO IT: "I AGREE THAT THE TAX CODE IS TOO COMPLICATED. HOWEVER, WHEN THE CONGRESSMAN PROPOSED THAT FERTILIZER NO LONGER BE DEDUCTIBLE, I SAT UP STRAIGHT AND SAID 'WHAT ?????'." THAT'S FROM PAT BIRD IN MARCUS, IOWA. IT REFERS TO MY COMMENTS ABOUT THE TAX REFORM BILL PROPOSED BY HOUSE WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE CHAIR, DAVE CAMP. PAT, THE QUICK ANSWER IS NEVER MIND - THAT BILL DIED A QUICK AND BRUTAL DEATH AT THE HANDS OF FELLOW REPUBLICANS WHO WERE AGHAST AT ENDING TAX BREAKS FOR SPECIAL INTERESTS AND TAXING BIG BANKS. LIKE PAT, VIRTUALLY EVERYONE FOUND SOMETHING TO HATE IN THE PROPOSAL, SO IT WAS HASTILY BURIED BEFORE IT COULD BECOME EVEN JUST A BASELINE FOR FUTURE REFORM. MY ADMIRATION FOR THE BILL WAS THAT IT WAS SPECIFIC AND FINALLY BEGAN THE WORK OF PRUNING OUT WASTEFUL FAVORITISM IN OUR TAX CODE. AND IT NAMED NAMES, SO TO SPEAK.  BUT IT TURNS OUT AMERICANS LOVE THEIR BIT OF WASTEFUL FAVORITISM, SO NOW WE'RE BACK TO TAKING ABOUT GETTING OUR FINANCIAL HOUSE IN ORDER BY RANTING OVER VAGUE GENERALITIES LIKE ENTITLEMENTS OR PORK.
REGARDLESS, REPRESENTATIVE CAMP DESERVES HIGH MARKS FOR HIS HONEST EFFORT TO MAKE OUR TAX CODE MORE EFFECTIVE AND FAIR. AND HIS NUMBERS ADDED UP.  THE LESSON TO BE LEARNED IS THAT DURING THIS ELECTION SEASON, ANY TIME A CANDIDATE TALKS ABOUT BALANCING THE BUDGET, THE CORRECT RESPONSE IS "SHOW ME THE MATH".
