THIS WEEK ON U.S. FARM REPORT

EPISODE # 2084

JULY 20-21, 2013

JOHN’S OPEN:

HELLO AND WELCOME TO U-S FARM REPORT, I'M JOHN PHIPPS. FEELS LIKE SUMMER TO ME. JULY IS LIVING UP TO EXPECTATIUONS FOR MOST OF FARM COUNTRY AS HEAT AND HUMIDITY EMBRACE MAKE EVERY OUTDOOR TASK A SWEAT-FEST. BUT COMING OFF 2012 YOU DON'T HEAR MANY COMPLAINING. THIS YEAR SEEMS TO HAVE SETTLED DOWN INTO SOMETHING WE MIGHT CALL TYPICAL, BUT MANY OF US ARE BEGINNING TO SUSPECT THAT GOLDILOCKS SEASONS - WHEN IT'S NOT TOO ANYTHING - WILL BE FAR FEWER IN THE FUTURE. THAT'S WHAT INSURANCE EXECUTIVES TOLD CONGRESS THIS WEEK, AS THEIR PAYOUTS FOR EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS ARE SOARING. AS THEY PUT IT, YOU MAY NOT BELIEVE IN GLOBAL WARMING, BUT YOU DO TO HAVE TO PAY FOR IT.

HEADLINES:

IT APPEARS SEVERE DRYNESS IS STARTING TO CREEP BACK INTO THE PICTURE FOR A PORTION OF THE COUNTRY THAT'S BEEN DROUGHT-FREE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. AND THIS WEEK'S RUN-UP OF HEAT DOESN'T HELP MATTERS. ACROSS THE EASTERN HALF OF THE COUNTRY, CROPS SIZZLED UNDER 90 DEGREE TEMPERATURES THIS WEEK. FOR CORN CROPS IN POLLINATION, TIMING HAS BEEN POOR ESPECIALLY IF YOUR FIELDS MISSED RAIN SHOWERS. EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE CAUSING A FUNGUS INFECTION ON MISSOURI PASTURES. AND UNFORTUNATELY, SOME LIVESTOCK HAVE DIED AS A RESULT. IT'S CALLED ERGOT. THE FUNGUS NORMALLY APPEARS IN SMALL POCKETS. BUT MISSOURI FORAGE SPECIALISTS SAY THE INFECTION IS PREVALENT STATEWIDE. THEY SAY WET, COOL, WEATHER FOLLOWED BY HIGH HEAT AND HUMIDITY CREATED IDEAL CONDITIONS TO INCUBATE ERGOT GROWTH. A SELECT GROUP OF FARMERS FROM ACROSS THE MIDWEST GATHERED THIS WEEK FOR FARM JOURNAL'S CORN COLLEGE NEAR BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS. THE FARMERS ARE THERE TO LEARN HOW TO GET MORE BUSHELS FROM THEIR FIELDS. THAT'S WHERE THIS WEEK'S MARKETING ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION WAS HELD. WE'LL HEAD OUT THERE IN A FEW MINUTES.
