What if You Didn’t Get Tillage Done in 2011?

December 30, 2011
By: Margy Fischer, Farm Journal Machinery Editor and Test Plot Director

In episode 12 of Corn College TV season 2, a farmer asked Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie how to handle leftover tillage in the following spring.

“This fall in some cases it was too dry to get fall tillage done properly,” Ferrie explains. “Farmers weren’t able to pull tools at the proper depth to get full width shatter.”
If you encounter that kind of problem, Ferrie says you have two options to continuing doing your tillage work. You can move the shanks closer together or switch to a tool with closer shanks.
For those farmers who didn’t get all of their primary tillage, done this spring will require preparation to catch up.
“Have a plan so you can be ready this spring to prepare your fields with the proper seedbed,” Ferrie says.
