Precision agriculture is ever-expanding into new areas of agriculture. One of the newest advancements is harnessing the power of precision ag for crop insurance purposes. Rural Community Insurance Services (RCIS) recently announced it has partnered with Ag Leader and Trimble to offer customers high-tech solutions for digital recordkeeping.

Specifically, farmers using Ag Leader’s SMS software or Trimble’s Farm Works mapping software can now submit field data electronically with RCIS’ Precision Farming service. This is a crop insurance data tool that gives farmers the ability to upload planting data electronically, which will improve communication between the farmer and the agency, decrease paperwork and increase overall efficiency, says Rick Greenwood, CIO of RCIS.

"As the role of technology in the farming industry continues to grow, farmers need access to improved technology to help with data management and recordkeeping," Greenwood says. "With our expanded technology platform and collaboration with Ag Leader and Trimble, RCIS provides farmers with the tools and support they need to efficiently manage risk and their business."

New features include performance improvements, the ability to support a multi-file import, and training for both agents and farmers, he adds. Steve Manning, a farmer insured by RCIS, says the enhancements should prove valuable additions to what the company already provides farmers.

"I look forward to seeing how their new collaboration will help me to use the data I collect during planting and harvesting, and speed up how quickly I’m able to report this information with my crop insurance agent," he says.

Mike Martinez, market manager with Trimble, says another potential benefit is faster claims.

"The press of a button gets the data to RCIS," he says. "The main goal here is to be a time-saver."
