Both farmers and residents of rural communities can support local nonprofits by participating in the 2013 America’s Farmers Grow Communities initiative. Entries for the Monsanto Fund project must be submitted by Nov. 30.

To enter for the chance to win $2,500 for a local nonprofit, eligible farmers should go to There, they can enroll and nominate a nonprofit. Meanwhile, residents of rural communities may use the website to suggest ideas or initiatives that deserve funding. Farmers can consider these ideas as part of registration.

One winner per eligible county will be selected at random, and winning farmers and nonprofits will be announced in January.

The Grow Communities initiative spans nearly 1,300 counties across 39 states. Over the past four years, the initiative has invested more than $13 million in rural communities, the Monsanto Fund says. More than 5,200 nonprofits have been helped.

In 2012, for example, Missouri nonprofits received 142 donations totaling $355,000. Donations went to community services, FFA, education, 4-H, fire and health services, and community improvement initiatives. All of the state’s eligible counties received double donations because they were declared to be in drought.
