Farmers Feeding the World Will Host Event at the Borlaug Dialogue

For the second year, Farmers Feeding the World will host a breakfast at the World Food Prize's 2012 Borlaug Dialogue in Des Moines, Iowa. The breakfast, titled, "FFA: Food For All: Transforming Grassroots Support into Sustainable Hunger Solutions," will take place at 7 a.m. on Oct. 18. The event will feature a discussion and debut of a short film documenting success stories from the "FFA: Food For All" competitive grant program, established by Farmers Feeding the World, the National FFA Organization and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.

Farmers Stop Harvesting to Lobby for Farm Bill

Hundreds of farmers, legislative representatives and agricultural leaders gathered in Washington, D.C., to encourage Congress to pass a new, comprehensive, five-year farm bill before current farm programs expire at the end of September. FAO and WTO Directors-General Meet

The Director-General of FAO, José Graziano da Silva, and the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Pascal Lamy, agreed this week that currently high international food prices do not amount to a crisis, but that continued vigilance is needed given existing tight markets. McDonald's to List Calories on Menus; Tests Healthier Menus

McDonald's Corp. said it will begin listing calorie information on restaurant and drive-through menus nationwide, starting next week, as the world's largest fast-food chain continues its push to appeal to more nutrition-conscious consumers. McDonald's also said it is testing menus for next year that will include recommended food groups from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2010 dietary guidelines. Read More.

Talking with farmers who are weathering the worst drought since 1956, I'm heartened by the number of producers who quickly link the withering corn crop with the ability to feed the world. I wasn't in the business—or even bornin 1956, but I've lived through several droughts. Memories of the 1988 drought are the most vivid, but this is the first time I've heard farmers linking the fields of forlorn crops with forgone meals for the hungry.

As the editor of Farm Journal magazine and the president of the Farm Journal Foundation that leads the Farmers Feeding the World initiative, that connection provokes a bittersweet pride for how farmers are engaging in the fight to alleviate hunger, both here and abroad. Read More.
