Question

Aug 12, 2009
I WATCH YOUR PROGRAM MOST EVERYDAY AND I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY THE MARKETS ARE NOT MOVING UP. I LIVE BY WATERLOO IOWA AND THE BEST GROUND IN THE STATE WAS JUST FLATTENED BY HAIL AND EVERYONE STILL SAYS WE WILL HAVE A BUMPER CROP. MY CROP WAS ALSO DAMAGED BY HAIL ,TWICE, AND THE FARM BUREAU SPOKESMAN REPORTED THAT 400,000 ACRES WHERE DAMAGED IN IOWA AND STILL THEY THINK WE WILL HAVE A BUMPER CROP? LATE PLANTED ACRES, COOL WEATHER, AND SLOW GROWING CROPS DON’T ADD UP TO BUMPER CROPS. IN MY OPINION UNTIL ITS IN THE BIN SAFE FROM MOTHER NATURE, THERE IS NO BUMPER CROP, YET.

We barely survived 7 full years of severe drought from 1999-2005- we felt like you do. Come to find out, we were too busy working harder than ever before in our lives, to realize it was only our very small, almost just a 3 county area, that was that bad. Now, we are looking at the best crops ever. Our ancestors moved here in 1886 to farm to get away from hail in your part of the country- only to find out we get even worse hail here! But, somehow, in our little corner, we've even missed that so far. It's seriously wall to wall corn, w/ our dryland looking to yield like our normal irrigated. Double earred, round & fully tipped out. Again, I realize we are a small part of the country, but I think when things look good, we farmers tend to not say anything - because you still never know. My prayers are with you- we completely understand your plight & feelings. I do think very often when out enjoying such beautiful crops, of those that I know are less fortunate somewhere. We also survived such a severe hail storm June 29, 2000. It destroyed a very wide & long swath through several states even. Please know others do care & understand your situation.
