You Really Have to Wonder Sometimes
Mar 18, 2010
You really have to wonder sometimes. The strength of our country is the envy of the world, and we have done much to deserve that adoration…and envy. But if you look the world over, you have to be concerned how much of that lofty status will deteriorate-or already is-due to selfishness and lack of ability to see the future for what it is.
The
Top Producer Frontier Tour began last week in Panama City, where we toured the
Panama Canal and the expansion project. We learned much about that country and how they are striving to make a better life for their people.
The Canal is directly responsible for 6% of the nation’s GDP. Add in the tourism and other activities surrounding the canal and the value to that country is immeasurable. And the people there know it.
The expansion project started in 2009, which will double the size of the ships that can move through the canal, will cost $5.2 billion by the time it is complete in 2014. More or less, they are building a new canal, or at least half of one to service the larger ships. That number surprised most of us on the trip.
When put into perspective of our own $700 trillion economic stimulus package, we wondered if we could accomplish anything remotely close to what they are doing in Panama, for even double the cost.
The overwhelming consensus of people on the trip is a very simple no.
