New player in the fertilizer industry
Jan 29, 2010
Chore time for me isn't what it used to be when I was growing up on our eastern Iowa farm, but taking care of a horse in the morning before I head in for work gives me a little time to think about the day ahead.
I was thinking…
... about fertilizer prices.
I'll admit, tracking fertilizer prices and analyzing the fertilizer markets is one of the toughest jobs I (try) to do. There are so many variables and as soon as I think I've got all the bases covered, something "new" pops up. Today, there was word BHP Billiton was buying a Canadian potash firm. My initial thought was the Canadian potash firm would be Potash Corp. -- the world's leader in potash production. After an initial gasp -- I realized that couldn't be the case. Well... it wasn't. BHP is buying Canada's Athabasca Potash -- a player... but certainly no Potash Corp.
One of the best sources of information on Potash Corp. I try to visit from time to time is Canada's Business News Network (BNN). Somewhat surprisingly, a friend of mine -- Mark Gulley of Soleil Securities -- was interviewed on BNN today, talking about the fertilizer market, equity pricing for fertilizer producers and the BHP purchase of Athabasca. Click here to check it out... it's worth the time to listen (you'll have to listen to a 30-second commerical before you get to the interview).
