KC Wheat Higher on Declining Crop Ratings

Jun 28, 2011

Kansas City wheat futures traded higher today, reversing the recent lower trend in the marketplace, according to traders.

USDA crop ratings released yesterday showed declines in winter wheat conditions, with all winter wheat increasing to 42% poor to very poor from 41% last week.

French milling wheat futures were trading stronger all morning, traders said, carrying over into the U.S. wheat markets today.

Some short-covering activity also boosted wheat prices head of Thursday's USDA acreage reports.

U.S. Dollar Trades Lower

Jun 21, 2011

Kansas City wheat futures traded stronger today, supported by strength in the U.S. Dollar and hot, dry weather in the Corn Belt, traders said.

Concerns about the weather in corn areas are based on hot, dry conditions going into the time period of June 28 through July 3.

Ideas that the market has been recently oversold also led to the bounce today, traders added.

While rains have caused some delays in the HRW wheat harvest, they will clear out soon and harvest will resume and continue to progress northward, traders said.

Short Covering in KC Wheat

Jun 08, 2011

Kansas City wheat futures experienced a small bounce today, with some short covering ahead of tomorrow's USDA supply and demand reports, according to traders.

Chicago corn futures are leading the grain markets in strength today, especially with stronger basis levels for corn, traders said.

Traders are reluctant to be short in the market ahead of tomorrow's reports.  The HRW wheat harvest is progressing, traders said, with reports of good test weights and excellent quality.

Production reports are a little better than expected at this point, traders added.

Weather Improves for French Wheat Areas

Jun 03, 2011

Kansas City wheat futures traded both sides of unchanged today, starting higher but moving lower early on improving weather for French wheat areas, according to traders.

USDA wheat export sales were mediocre today, traders added, estimated at 29.6 million metric tonnes of old crop and 338.4 million metric tonnes of new crop wheat.

Economic news for the U.S. this morning was worse than expected, traders said, with job growth decreasing and the unemployment rate raised from 8.9% to 9.15.  The news placed commodity markets under pressure, traders added.

Trading was relatively quiet this morning, with spread trades most active and rolling into outer months.
