Machinery As Art

Jun 20, 2014

Light designer Dean Skira recently transformed the way people view machinery, specifically shipyard cranes. The Skira team, a Croatian architectural lighting design studio, used industrial machines to create a metal ballet, titled "Lighting Giants", using the power of light during the Visualia Festival in Pula. The machines, capable of lifting 200 tons, were positioned to resemble folded paper cranes often seen in the art of origami:

The piece used more than 16,000 color combinations during the course of the metal dance. A remote control projected different hues of LED lights on the cranes every hour for 15 minutes. Skira wanted to create a different role for cranes using a colorful stage. The large steel machines stand as a reminder in Croatia of the industrial revolution in the 19th century. The visual symphony shows the strength and magnitude, as well as the elegance and grace, of such powerful machines.

So the next time you use your farm equipment, whether a combine, auger, or grain bin, you could be looking at a work of art.
